Need help auto filtering room noise

Recommended Posts

When I recently did a tracking gig at a church, I could not disable the air handling which produced some low level rumble. I did sample about a minute of it all by itself across all the mics in their tracking positions. What I need to know is if there is some tool that can take that room information and auto filter it out of the recordings I made. I am a Mac with Digital Performer and I am not likely to invest in a PC to do this, so if you can think of a solution that works with a MAC tool you have used that would be great. I realize your request was for Mac based software... but you might try to make friends with a PC owner as there are several PC shareware and even a couple freeware apps that will do exactly what you want. Syntrillium Software's Cooledit, as well as Sonic Foundry's Soundforge will both provide excellent results. Another alternative if you're PC friend challenged is to rent a PC from a local dealer. I live in the southern Cal area, and can rent a fast PC for about $25 bucks a day. Noise reduction is typically a non-realtime process, so you don't have to rent super high-end machines... get two cheap PC's with decent sized hard disks and you'll get an amazing amount of work done for 1/8 the price of buying a mac package. Good luck!
