WFTurner
I've never had the opportunity to play a 7 string guitar. Is the 7th string at the top or bottom of the tuning spectrum? What are some of the most used tunings? I keep mulling over the idea of using the 7th string at the top of the tuning scale, chromatically like the E9th tuning of a pedal steel. Seems like it'd offer an intriguing possibility of combinations for country type of picking. ------------------ William F. Turner Songwriter turnermusic William F. fantasticsound
Typically, a low string, like adding a 5th string to a bass guitar. Usually tuned to B, so as to add another string, but (today) rockers can still play V chords with the same fingering as with root on the 6th or 5th string. ------------------ Neil Reality: A few moments of lucidity surrounded by insanity. Gabriel E.
Yeah. It's almost always a lower string tuned to B or A. Some players (like George Lynch and that moron "Maestro" Alex Gregory) have experimented with a high A string but the string has to be so thin and have such high tension that it breaks very easily - you can't really bend it. Mark Zeger
My guitar teacher (from 20 years back) had a Gretsch George Van Eps 7 string, an amazing hollowbody. It had a nice fat low B perfect for root/5th and walking bass parts on solo arrangements. I would love to find one of those guitars.
kudyba
Check out some of my comments I recently made about the Schecter 007 7-string I just got. It has the low "B". For country licks, I'd imagine the Danelectro 7-string would fit the bill. As for "Maestro", that guy cracks me up. I met him at winter NAMM at our party. One of his cronies was walking around looking for editors/writers and saw my badge and thought I was a writer and talked my ear off for 15 minutes about his lawsuits and how he invented the 7-string, with a funny Italian accent... Jim Soloway
I've been playing 7 string for about four or five years. I play solo jazz and standards with the extra stringed to a low A. I find that both more useful and more intuitive than tuning to the more common B. Lenny Breau played a 7 string for a few years at the end of his life. He was one of the few who added a higher string. BTW, I owned one of the Dan Electro Mod 7 strings when they first came out. I found the intonation of the low string so bad that it was pretty much useless. Too bad, the tones were pretty cool.
