Christopher810
Hey guys I am a longtime reader first time poster...My question is this ...I am looking to achieve that heavy tight modern distortion sound without spending alot....I have a 7 string so that side of it is taken care of ..I also am using a marshall halfstack but on its own it doesnt go that extra mile of heavyness..Anyone know of a really good pedal or something of that nature to add to this rig to get that tone?..Being a drummer/studio owner my guitar knowledge is limited...Thanx Chris

clockwirk
There are some pretty cool tube powered distortion pedals out there if you are willing to spend a couple/few hundred bucks. The Budda Phatman or Zenman (zenman is higher gain), the Soldano GTO, A Matchless Dirt Box or Hot Box (although those aren't made anymore, you have to buy them used $$$), Mesa made the V-twin pedal a few years back and now has the bottle rocket. Buying one of these is like adding another tube channel to your amp and will probably be what you're looking for. For less money you can get a good fuzz pedal. That might not be your sound though. Try everything out first. ~clockwirk~
stanner
THE heaviest of heavy in stomp boxism to me is the 'experience' pedal. it is the damndest thang. AMPSSOUNDBETTERLOUDER
clockwirk
That experience pedal is pretty freaked out, but I don't know if it would give you that modern high gain thing. It's more of a cool crapped out fuzz pedal. ~clockwirk~

You didn't hear this from me, but a Boss Metalzone is what you want. Tedster
Why is it that I can see Chip wearing a trench coat walking up to this guy, opening up his coat to reveal a ton of stompboxes...and saying "Psst...hey...kid...yeah, you...you wanna buy a stompbox?" greed2000
You might check out a Jekyl & Hyde (spelling?). I've not heard one yet, but I have heard a lot of good things about them...
Lisa
Chris - You didn't specify which Marshall amp you were using. Some amps have more gain than others. Also, since you're playing 7-string, you're going to want a pedal that works well in the lower ranges too. Can you give us an idea of what kind of distortion sound you are looking for? Perhaps give us an example of a band or a song. That will definitely help us to give you a better recommendation. I play through Marshalls and use a Boss Super Overdrive for adding heavier distortion. I do like some of the Danelectro stuff too, as Chip mentioned above. Some of the "metal" distortion pedals can tend to lose definition in the lower-range notes. You really have to try out a few different boxes and see what works out best with your setup, especially since you're playing 7-string.

The downside is that along with it goes any possibility of unique character. But it works for that application. ------------------ New and Improved Music Soon: http://www.mp3.com/chipmcdonald Guitar Lessons in Augusta Georgia: www.chipmcdonald.com Eccentric blog: https://chipmcdonaldblog.blogspot.com/ / "big ass windbag" - Bruce Swedien
