So I'm on mp3.com looking around and I decided to check out the Metal genre. I couldn't figure out the subcategories... I guess I'm too old for Metal!

Alternative Metal =

Black Metal =

Dark Ambient/Noise =

Death Metal =

Doom/Stoner Metal =

Gothic Metal =

Grindcore =

Heavy Metal =

Industrial Metal =

Instrumental Metal =

Metalcore =

Power Metal =

Progressive Metal =

Rapcore =

Spiritual Metal =

Thrash/Speed Metal =

Any ideas as to what means what? OK, I can guess Power Metal, Instrumental Metal, and some of the others but what is Metalcore? or Doom/Stoner Metal, or even Spiritual Metal?

To me, Metal means: Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Ozzy and AC/DC. This is all getting to complicated.

ALL ABOARD......HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/contrib/drowned/magic.gif

I know a tad about spiritual metal. The classification is primarily but not entirely a group of Christian metalheads. My hats are off to em. I've never heard a pastor speak well of them. I quess metal is just too angry of a sound for the leaders of the church, but these guys continue to say what they feel they are told. Some are downright prophetic.

I don't want to start a flame war here. http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/contrib/ruinkai/FIREdevil.gif But Zep were not Metal IMO. They were hard rock. Deep Purple were cool, Tap were also hard rock.

But you did remind me of another one for my list.

The Holy Diver himself, Ronnie James Dio. He may only stand about 5'3", but that voice was 10 feet tall!!!!

Khan- I agree with ya, I guess there is a fine line between Hard rock and metal, seems pretty obvious to me though.

One of those that caught my eye was Doom/Stoner metal, huh???? I don't know about any of you but anytime I've been *Stonered* doom was the last thing from my mind!!!!!!!!!! I guess I was just too consumed with "Where are the damn cheetos" to worry about doom and all that http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Can someone please clarify this category for me????

yep with ya on that one... we call em Heavy Rock here or progressive rock either way they were way cool imho.

As for Doom/Stoner doesn't that have something to do with the after effects of a nights indulgence on the old wacky baccy? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif and shouldn't it rea Doom/Stoned? Haha

IMHO...early Zep..."Whole Lotta Love" era... was what one might call "Proto-metal" at least. Actually, they did call it heavy metal in those days as they had nothing to compare it to. There was quite a difference between early Zep and, say, Ten Years After etc...and quite a difference between early Zep and later Zep.

But later Zep LPs definitely lost the "metal" thing.

But all of that other "Grindcore"...something to do with coffee beans?

Yep, my hat's off to Christian Metal bands, too. They've got a message and they don't care if the Reverend Billy Bighair supports them or not...the message is what's important...standing up for what they believe...spiritual warfare, if you will. Takes balls. I admire that.

Reverend Billy Bighair Hehehehehe! And the Doomed Stoner genre I believe first maranades the cheeto's in lighter fluid than wow's the lassies with his blue flame belch. Rockers on the other hand are much more organic, they prefer the standard leguem cocktail and keep their blue flame behind em!

Black Metal =

They grunt like the Cookie Monster in latin about Satan and have tempos that sound more like polkas than the 300+bpm they think they're playing at.

Dark Ambient/Noise =

This is Alternative Metal played through a cheap delay pedal or a cheap amp with built in reverb.

Death Metal =

Hyper fast metal played by people with inferiority and obsessive compulsive complexes. Lots of changes and lyrics about Satan (but not in latin; they're more pragmatic a lot than the black metal guys).

Doom/Stoner Metal =

Black Sabbath riffs played untainted by the Seattle sound, combined with mid 80's British metal soloing.

Gothic Metal =

Alternative metal genre; self-important lyric content combined with cheap guitar sounds and lots of processing.

Grindcore =

Choppy metal, slower than death metal; some aspect of hardcore punk ascending/descending cyclic riffing. Emphasis on riffs, sometimes medical terminology lyrics, medical terminology names.

Heavy Metal =

Judas Priest and Iron Maiden.

Industrial Metal =

Metal played in a manner that sounds quantized to 16th notes. What Al Jourgesen does.

Instrumental Metal =

Self explanatory.

Metalcore =

Retro metal. Kids playing what sounds like late 80's metal.

Power Metal =

Alternative metal format featuring "select" "classic" metal phrasing played with a more pretentious attitude.

Progressive Metal =

Metal played with the intent on either extrapolating on a non-generic theme or to impress.

Rapcore =

Hardcore/punk with someone rapping over it.

Spiritual Metal =

Any of the above with lyrics about God.

Thrash/Speed Metal =

Late 80's variant of heavy metal that placed less emphasis on technical execution over the importance of aggressive speed; less palm muting than death metal or grindcore.

Q: What kind of music do you like?

A: Rock and roll

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

I'll have a cup of coffee, please...

Decaf, caf, light, medium, or dark roast? Javan, Colombian, Sumatran, Kenyan, Arabica, hazelnut, french vanilla, yada yada yada...

Now, let's take some of those metal sub-genres described by Professor Chip and combine them with other genres and see what we come up with...

Industrial country...Country tunes about working on an assembly line...

But, you get the drift.

Geez, I need a beer.

I KNEW Chip would find his voice for this thread! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Great job Chip! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

BTW, wasn't the story of how Led Zepplin was named the ORIGIN of the term heavy metal. You know, Keith Moon heard about the band and said: It'll go over like a lead balloon". The original "heavy metal".

  • 3 weeks later...

In case anyone was actually interested in some of the different and exiting kinds of metal I came up with some accurate definitions.

Alternative Metal = Metal music where the song is more important than the riffing and egos.

Black Metal = Typical European style which draws heavily from classical music to create a large orchestral vibe.

Dark Ambient/Noise = Imagine Andrian Belew creating abstract music.

Death Metal = Aggressive metal characterized by excessive screaming, pounding and scary lyrics.

Doom/Stoner Metal = The simplest of the metals. Think Monster Magnet.

Gothic Metal = Metal with ties to the occult and some elements of electronica.

Grindcore = Downtuned, bass heavy furious riff metal.

Heavy Metal = Old School metal. Typically played in E or A minor.

Industrial Metal = Exacting and electronic metal.

Instrumental Metal = usually some guitarist wanking.

Metalcore = a mixture of Metal and Hardcore. Punk with metallic guitars.

Power Metal = Grandiose metal with emphasis on rythym.

Progressive Metal = Highly technical metal, more like fusion jazz played through a mesa boogie triple rectifier and an opera singer.

Rapcore = A mixture of rap and Hardcore. Usually inner city and vocal oriented.

Spiritual Metal = Any variety of metal which includes religious messages.

Thrash/Speed Metal = The new school metal which is still based on riffing but is more rhythmically advanced and has more modern vocals then oldschool. In case anyone was actually interested in some of the different and exiting kinds of metal I came up with some accurate definitions.

Ah, but you've forgotten a few...

Rusty Metal...metal played by aging rockers

Scrap Metal...think 15 year olds with their first guitar banging out Metallica's "Enter Sandman" out of tune.

Metalflake...metal played by flaky people

That cover it? Or are there more???
