Anyone working on anything cool?

So, what are your latest conquests? New licks? Riffs? Fingerstyle thing?

I just thought I'd bring this up, as I've just been working on an acoustic fingerstyle rendition of "Martha My Dear"...the old McCartney tune off the White Album. I read something in this month's GP about that Juber guy that used to play with McCartney releasing an album of fingerstyle Beatle tunes, and a guy at work talking about someone he knew playing that song on piano, and, well, the challenge was on. The syncopation sounded ideal for fingerstyle guitar. It's pretty tricky for an old fumblefingers like me, but what I've got so far sounds pretty cool. Hint...(if anyone wants to try it)...I detuned my G string a half step and capoed on the third fret, with an opening chord of C (fingered like an A but allowing for the detuned G).

Hey Tedster-

There is a book that has Beatles songs adapted for fingerstyle acoustic, I've seen it many times in the stores. It's challanging stuff. I can play Blackbird and Yesterday fingerstyle but I learned those out of some magazines. Greensleeves is a great song to play fingerstyle. I adapted it from piano music and the written versions I've seen for guitar vary greatly.

Practice till your fingers bleed....or until something good comes on television.

Hi Tedster,

About 'that Juber guy' featured in this month's GP...yeah, he is a great fingerstyle player. Go to www.acousticmusicresource.com and order some of his CD's. You won't regret it. The CD of Beatles covers is really good but I like LJ's previous release, Altered Realities, even more.

My current fingerstyle fave, however, is Doyle Dykes. Simply amazing. Not only does he have truly awesome technique, but his arrangements and compositions are first rate too (kind of a cross between Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, and Joe Pass if you can imagine that). Doyle endorses Taylor guitars and has been touring the country doing free workshops at Taylor dealers. Don't miss him if he comes to your area!

Hey Fet

strange you should mention Bach.... I'm doing a long term project with the principal viola player from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra ( Yah Arm.... Geez that's a mouthful) and yep its jolly old JSB. I shall be playing some variations on the guitar for Partita 3 and Air on a G String tomorrow..... I'm absolutely caching myself if its any consolation, I haven't played anything this high brow for bloomin' ages.......

Wish me luck y'all!!!

Hey Simon, I'm here, sweet of you to ask. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif I had an awfully busy weekend and today it's more of the same. Not as much time to post as I'd like. I have a session going on tonight too, but I am sure I'll be back to harrass you all soon. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Of course if you'd like to throw me any bait, that may hasten my return. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Just refretted a '53 Gibson L4C...great shape and a great guitar. Starting on a couple of projects: A two pickup cedar body blues guitar...with a Strat style vibrato....and a stand up fretless electric bass, using my passive piezo/magnetic hybrid pickup system. The bass will use a standard bolt on fretless neck(34" scale) on a solid, carved cedar body...but I'm struggling with the "peg" design...I need an elegant way to attach either one or two pegs to the bass(probably from turned maple/purpleheart/maple stock). Any of you engineering types out there, please contribute if you feel the urge....

We played in DeKalb Illinois this past weekend. I felt like around zero degrees at load out. Would that count as something cool ? http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

My brother and I are in the planning stage of building my new Srat type thing-a-ma-jig (to go with my Les Paul type what-cha-ma-call-it). Just trying to figure out all the hardware and pickup possibilities.

Sometimes life is hell,huh.... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I pulled all of the Chris Whitley Tunings from his web site and have been try to cop his feel and some of his licks. I have also been trying to catch the Radiohead guitar effects vibe. OK Computer is just out of this world man!!!

Its nice to see there are some fingerstylists out there. Its seems like a lost art.

My sister was a born fingerpicker. She played guitar first (she's two years older), and was she ever a whiz at finger-picking. I never did get the hang of it, but I've done my share of studio work; some rhythm, but mostly either leads or pop fills >. For her, though, finger-styled playing was as natural as breathing. And she didn't fall into familiar patterns... she created new, very workable patterns as she went. She unfortunately all but gave up the guitar to live a "normal" life, while I am the one that took on the weird musician life. I'd still love to be able to do what she used to do, and I'd still love to see her pick it back up, because I know as soon as her fingers got acclimated, she'd pick it right back up where she was. She used to lament over not being able to play leads or licks, but I've seen her in a studio environment where her finger-picking "held" the song together; imaginatively, determining the whole arrangement, determining the rhythmic feel.

I have to agree that this lost art might be getting a revival. I wish she'd jump on in. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
