JuR Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 I while ago I really became into the strokes. The vocals seem to be very midband or something. Very weird but also interesting and original. Anyone knows how to get such a sound?
Danny M Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 If it's really the sound you want, you could try rolling off the lows and higs to varying degrees. I haven't heard the music in question, so it's just a guess, however... -Danny Grace, Peace, V, and Hz, Danny
Rog Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 I think this came up on prosoundweb a while ago. Try doing a search over there. "That's what the internet is for. Slandering others anonymously." - Banky Edwards.

loudist Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 Are you referring to the distortion thats mixed into the vocal?
Jotown Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003
Originally posted by GT3: avalon 737
Distorted in the pre and heavily boosted mids (or severely cut hi/lo) on the EQ section, ala Fred Durst. Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"
trick fall Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 I read an interview with the guy who produced the record in I believe Sound on Sound. So you might want to do a search on their site, but if memory serves me right he talked about the singer singing in to a peavey practice amp and then micing the practice amp for some of the stuff.
george costanza Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 I know there's a vocalist in the Strokes...but is there a singer, too?
adz Posted February 5, 2003 Posted February 5, 2003 I think this is the article you are refering to... http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/Apr02/articles/gordonraphael.asp
Chip McDonald Posted February 5, 2003 Posted February 5, 2003 Well, a great singer always gets a great tone, so that's what you're hearing. Guitar Lessons in Augusta Georgia: www.chipmcdonald.com Eccentric blog: https://chipmcdonaldblog.blogspot.com/ / "big ass windbag" - Bruce Swedien
Gtoledo3 Posted February 5, 2003 Posted February 5, 2003 I read a whole article about them amping the guys voice... then in one of the latest MIX mag's the guy that does their live show says they use the avalon for distortion b/c that's what they did on the record. Go figure! I do know that the tone they get on the live show is very much like what's on the record. Want mix/tracking feedback? Jotown Posted February 5, 2003 Posted February 5, 2003 Again, Avalon 737 is what they tracked through. They also allegedly used a Peavey practice amp as a vocal effect on a couple of tunes. Remember the Cher autotune debate around the Believe song. The Mix interview said it was this complex vocoder triggering scheme employed by the producer. Reality: Autotune. But people don't want to admit it was that simple, and they are afraid that everyone will copy their new gimmick. (which they always do) Avalon 737, and then maybe some Amp Farm treatment in the mix. He cut the entire project in Logic. Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"

Meriphew_dup1 Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 I had read something that stated the vox were run through a small guitar amp to get that lo-fi/distorted sound. www.meriphew.com
Salyphus Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 I think the Strokes sound much better through a nopass filter ;)
Jose Cobelas Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 No eq, just a little compression in his parts. Something like this will do: :D
