Last night I recorded a drummer who has a very hard kick drum foot. The sound on a 20in bass drum had very little body and tons of attack I put a blanket over the the end of the b.d. and a chair a couple feet from the drum with the mic under the blanket/chair. It worked quite well anybody do this with any frequency?

I could have used that idea last January! I had a similar drummer incident with open back kicks. It was almost all attack and virtually no tone.

That's a great old trick, it allows the bass frequencies to build up. You can try variations on the theme with cardboard tubing (big diameter stuff) and other kick drums butted up against the first. And sometimes I've put the blanket over the drummer and beaten him but use mallets not sticks, they seem to have a better effect.

I don't want to bum anyone out, but I noticed Yawn-ee keeps his drummer in a plexiglass enclosure. And several audiophiles told me if you have a muddy sounding bass coming out of your speaker box, place a wooden baffle in front of the woofer. About four inches away. Whitefang
I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
