Thrift Store Hammond BV gets Leslie, upgrades...

Update to the thrift store $129 Hammond BV saga:

After a fairly extensive search with not too much success, finding good second-hand Leslie 122's pretty much all fetching upwards of $1500  , I decided I'd rather blow my hard earned cash on a NEW one for a few hunderd more and know for sure that it's not worn out or anything and has a warranty. She should be with me by early next week. No canoe ride for this one ;)

I also ordered the Trek II percussion unit for the BV and a Leslie switch/cable kit for her. I'm prolly going to get the smooth drawbar conversion kit for her too ( Smooth Drawbars ).

This is turning out to be a bit more of a project than I'd thought, but loads of fun! :)

More piccies soon at Dave\'s BV Restoration webpage .

Cheers,

:DTR

Congratulations Dave. I also thought about the new one but opted to take my chances and see how this one does ove the course of a few months. I am prepared to put some money into it but if it gets out of hand I may be rethinking your approach. So which new one did you buy - the one by Hammond/Suzuki, Diversi or the walnut one I see advertised (which I cant figure out who makes it)and where are you getting it from?

It's a brand new, in the box, walnut Leslie 122A from a nice fellow called Bill Brown ( BB Organs ) - follow the Leslie link in the LHS panel. I asked specifically if this was a "new old stock" unit and the reply was "nope, it's brand new, they still make them".

Hey b_3guy, I'm thinking of changing my ID to b_vguy (shouldn't that be BV_guy?)....what do you think? :D:thu:

Sorry DTR if I'm misunderstanding you.

I believe that Hammond Suzuki makes this Leslie. This is distributed my several organ specialist including GOFF, Keyboard Exchange Int'l, Keyboard Sanctuary ,BB as well as others.

I'm sure it sounds excellent but you might want to inquire a little further into the differences if any between it and the older Leslies(ie wood vs particle board, components etc). Or not. :thu:

Even Leslies built in the 70's were made different than ones before that. Here is an excellent link to some really good info on Leslies and their age

You have it right Markyboard - it is the one made by Hammond/Suzuki. I'm not really worried if it's real wood or not....I'm sure it will sound excellent. BB assured me of this, and that it's much quieter (motors) than the old ones. We'll see!!

I'm still in the market for an old one as well (why not have 2? :D:thu: ) so let me know if you hear of a good one going begging anytime....

How are you getting on with your new 147?

I can't believe you left the B3 behind!!

Cheers for now,

Yeah I'm still thinking about it to Dave. But then I'd also be thinking about a second Leslie. I have no room in my studio basement for a B3 and I think it would suck up my money to fix it up for my living room. If I had your wood working skills I might consider it more.

There is a real nice looking 122RV on ebay right now. If I hadn't scored mine I'd definitely consider it.

Let us know how the new one sounds and hopefully tomorrow I'll get my preamp back to try mine out.

I've played through new and old Leslies and I don't hear much of a difference sound-wise. There is a difference in build materials, with the new Leslies having some particle board and a less durable veneer than the older ones. Also, the new Leslies have a styrofoam lower rotor as opposed to wood.

Not sure if this is still the case, but at one point, the upper rotor on new Leslies spun in the opposite direction because the motor was mounted upside down due to UL requirements. There is a simple fix for this that involved flipping the motor over.

There are a few other cosmetic differences, but you should be happy with the new Leslie. Get a nice cover for it from LeCover or TukiCovers and if you are traveling a lot, get a road case.

Regards,

Eric

Hey Dave,

That organ's gonna kick serious butt! :D Enjoy - and pleeeez post some recordings of it.

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

She cleaned up real purdy. :D

Glad you decided on a new Leslie. Since I live just across the Bay from you, I had been debating about letting you borrow my 122 to test out the B3.
