help in choosing a inexpensive keyboard for gigging

hi,

I recently switched from bass to keyboard in a weekly gig I have. I am actually a keyboardist who plays bass and guitar, but it was easier to find a good bassist to replace me and I switch to keyboard. Part of the reason why I hardly gig on keyboard is I dont' like to pull down synths in my studio.

Anyway I have decided to buy a inexpensive (cheap) keyboard around $500-600, to gig with.

Unfortunately I live in Jamaica where I dont' have access to hear any of these keyboards so have to rely on mp3's and other users judgements.

Let me start by saying what is important to me and my biases.

I am a roland man foremost. It is important to be able to find different sounds quickly, cause we are a house band that has to back up singers on the spur of the moment depending who is in the audience. So I need to find sounds quickly.

We cover, blues, jazz,reggae,dancehall,pop,rock....you get the picture EVERYTHING, depending on who wants to play what song.

I would need good

piano, electric piano, clavinet, organs, strings, pads, kalimba, vibes, brass and some synth solo weird sounds/efx used in dancehall.

My choices so far are:

Roland RS-5 which has no aftertouch, but is light and I imagine sounds like most roland synths (which is a plus for me) but has no expandibility.

Alesis Q6.1(2) the last time I played alesis stuff about four years ago, I didnt' like them cause I found them too bright for me, but I have heard people say good things about them.

Yamaha S-30 I hear it has a piano action and I know I like the sounds of the motif..

Emu Pk-6.....the most expandable of the lot

and

Kurzweil KME-61, like the alesis have heard good things about it, BUT I usually find the kurzweil sounds too vanilla ( no offense kurzweil employees and users just mho)

any and all advice appreciated..

thanks,

richard sven

VANILLA??????? Wasssupwitdat? New nomenclature?? http://www.gifs.net/animate/bubajog.gif

Joe Pine (60's talk show host who sported a wooden leg) to Frank Zappa -- "So, with your long hair, I guess that makes you a woman." Frank Zappa's response -- "So, with your wooden leg, I guess that makes you a table."

If it was me, I'd go for the S80. A little more expensive but since the S90 came out, you can pick up a new one for under a $1,000. Great piano action (in my opinion). There are probably some good deals in the "used" market also.
