Ridiculous question here...

Ok this question might sound kind of juvenile or whatever, but...how hard would you rate "The Emperor" piano concerto (Beethoven's no. 5 in E-flat major) as far as technical difficulty goes, on a scale from 1-10, 10 being the hardest? I've heard it's hard, but how difficult is it in comparison to other concertos, and what's difficult about it?

Also, how about the Saint-Saens no. 3?

Well, for me it clearly rates infinity. But that's because, by the standards of actual, true piano players, such as yourself, who are capable of playing difficult classical pieces -- I suck.

The Emperor is in my top 10 piano concerto mp3 collection. Never saw the score, but it doesn't seem too difficult. The dynamic changes and the way the piano flows might make it a little more difficult to learn.Check this page. These guys are the best dealers I know.Guaranteed

lol, yes "splunge" sums it up just perfectly!

Like I said, a ridiculous thread...it's just, in order for me to get the manuscript myself I have to get my parents to take me all the way down to Houston (a good hour drive or so), which is hard to do sometimes. But as soon as I get a hold of the score, I'll relay the information back to you.

heh, well I really doubt that after all this time any of you really care, but I FINALLY got the score to this (the G.Henle Verlag edition) and started on it yesterday, checking out in particular the beginnings of the first movement and the last movement, and reading along the entire score as I listened to the Fleisher recording of it. The piece demands, obviously, fast scales and what have you, but I don't consider it out of my range. To be honest, it'll probably be RIGHT at the top of my capability, which I think is good.

I think the hard part about the song will be that it's so exhausting, especially the Rondo, with the jumps in the left hand and everything. Still, I think I'll take the challenge. Wish me luck...

Heh, heh, heh...that's a good answer. I wish I could help you out with the 1-10 scale thing, but even without being familiar with the piece, I'm going to have to be a little more optimistic than oo (infinity) and go with, oh, about 37 - with 10 being the hardest possible thing for me to currently play, and 20 being never achievable in my lifetime.

I'm sure that helps you like not at all.

Dave: good luck on "Mary", I hear the left hand can be a real pain in that song :freak: ...just practice it slowly and carefully...

Funny thing is I actually just started covering the Stevie Ray "Mary Had A Little Lamb" in a new startup band. The tricky part for me, though, is singing it!

Sorry Dave, but no one sucks at piano as bad as JimmieWannaB. (Maybe the handle should be PianistWannaB. :D )
