simple question re: harmony

Recommended Posts

I post this here since there's a greater likelihood of training than on the "geetar" forum.

I'm fairly aware musically, but recently I came across this chord designation : "C#dim6".

Now, I know what diminished (1-b3-b5), diminished 7ths (1-b3-b5-bb7) & half-diminished (1-b3-b5-b7) chords are; I've also re-checked various reference books (including some of those Nich Slominsky epics) but I can't get a clue as to exactly what the writer means by "C#dim6".

Is this supposed to be (1-b3-b5-6) ?

Is this a common term that I've somehow missed ?

Thanks in advance for any help !

No such animal! :D Not in modern harmony, anyway. I assume what they mean is "C#dim7", which is spelled; C#-E-G-Bb. A diminished seventh is actually a major 6th above the root, which I assume is the reason they spelled it this way.

Some confusion over the name is natural because diminished seventh chords are based on an 8-note scale (eg. C#-D#-E-F#-G-A-Bb-C) in which the "seventh" is actually a major sixth from the root.

Hope that helped! :)

Peace all,

Steve

Thanks, like I said, I couldn't figure out what they were intending !

Another question, though, doesn't "dim.7" refer to a diminished chord w/a diminished 7th...?

Either way, thanks again !

I wonder if they mean the diminished triad with a minor 6? This would be C# E G A. This is just A7 first inversion, but it might make more sense for a given progression to treat it as a C# chord.

As a furinstance: C6 C#dim6 G7

What were the chords around it?

BMan, that "A7" substitution was my best guess, too.

Context, in this case, is not helpful since this is from a group project oever on the Songwriters Forum ("share a chord progression").

Thanks, all !
