E-MU's MP-7

I just came from a clinic at Guitar Center here in Atlanta about the new E-MU MP-7. It's remarkable! It's so flexible and easy to get around that you can get lost for hours! 16 arps all going at once, 16 realtime controls for each of the 16 tracks(well, you had to select the track first), 16 buttons separate from the pads for use in recording grid mode without having to flip through multiple screens, USB ready, the sound set from the MO'PHATT but with ALL of the features of the Proteus 2000, awesome sounds, and get this......A RIBBON!!!(like the one on the Triton) that you can program anyway you choose!! The features go on and on. I think its gonna give the MPC a run for the money if you can get by with only 16 tracks, no sampler, & no floppy disk or hard drive. I was impressed! Anyone else heard it yet? What do you think?

I didn't go to Summer NAMM but I've heard it. It is awesome!! Nice, rich, thick, punchy sounds. Oh yeah, the factory demos are even cool. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/cool.gif It has a lot of potential if you don't need a sampler or more than 16 tracks which I thought was a bummer. But the cool factor is that if you have a E4 ULTRA sampler, you can burn your own roms and put them in the MP-7. Like all of my favorite loops that I BEAT MUNGE( a feature in my E4XT ULTRA), I put in my Proteus 2000. They said that it's the same process. The way that I figured is that if I need more tracks, I can sample the beat in the sampler, burn the rom, and I'll have 15 more tracks. One more thing with the BEAT MUNGE feature it will tell you the tempo or you can set it. I'm sorry!! I've gotten wayyy off topic. I'm just that excited about it. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif And I thought that I couldn't use any thing other than the MPC. One last thing, the one that I heard was a beta version but they said that chances are ALL the sounds would make it to the production model.

Call me weird, but I fail to get too excited about a new product that's just a repackaging of stuff they already have. These new boxes are simply their tone modules (which are very good, I agree) with a sequencer and knobs. The sampler burning capability is old news with the models based on the proteus 2000.

Same thing with the yamaha's : dx200 and an200. It seems they got the plg boards, threw it into a previous product, added a little salt, and voila, new product.

Of course manufacturers have to extend their technologies to recoup their r&d effort. Still...

I think Roland and AKAI broke some ground with this stuff. Now the rest just seems like copy cats.

Who's going to come out with some thing cool, unique, and useful? (works for me so far, I haven't had too much of a G.A.S. attack with some of the new gear http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif ) I'm waiting to see the final NAMM reports and see if the're anything really interesting in the pipeline.

Sure, it's existing E-MU sound technology - but consider a Groovebox with:

- 32 external MIDI channels

- 12th order E-MU filters

- 16 simultaneous arpeggiators (with 300 presets and 100 user arp patterns)

- 6 analog outs (3 stereo)

- 3 ROM expansion slots

- Ribbon controller

- 16 knobs (more than any other E-MU gear I'm aware of)

- and even a goose-neck light adapter

For someone into this kind of instrument - that's pretty exciting stuff. I'm curious what the sequencer is like.

Well, that's my point http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif

The 1st 5 items you get in the module. The ribbon controller you get in a lot of good keyboards. The knobs well, more common place everyday.

I want something original !

Rod, I wouldn't say that you're wierd. Different people, different uses. That's perfect for me. Instead of taking my whole rack of modules with me, I get my sounds, samples, and a drum machine by consolidation into one unit. True, it is old news tech., but very convenient. When we travel(quite a lot lately), I could take the MPC but what about all of my sounds it only holds 32Meg? I could take my E4XT ULTRA(128MB) but what about my drum machine? BTW, our church band uses the MPC a lot. I agree it's not ground breaking technology but with the features & sound, it's alright with me. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gifhttp://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Count me in for one!!!
