I just snipped this from Prosoundweb: -------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just a bit on some new things. I didn't get to see Tube Tech, Vintech, Millenia, and a few others quite yet.. Tomorrow? Crane Song is there with all of their great gear; I'm going back tomorrow to tweak the STC-8 to see if it can be equally as aggressive as silky-smooth. The new IBIS EQ is wonderful. HEDDs coloration features are audible and useful.. What to buy first?!? http://www.cranesong.com Manley have Slam on display. Freaking great gear, great company too. http://www.manleylabs.com Groove Tubes is showing VIPre, of course, and a new tube DI called DItto. It's a floor or table-friendly box; I've requested a pair in rack-mount form... DItto, $400.00. http://www.groovetubes.com Chandler showed their Neve equivalent preamps and EQs, as well as a new stereo Pre/DI in a single rack and a two-space compressor/limiter with six response settings, both of which are based upon a design found in a classic studio. The comp/limiter sounded wonderful, with lots of character in its response curve (not necessarily transparent). It can pop and smash. I want. It's $4000.00 list. http://www.wavesdistribution.com ADAM caused me to need to go and change my armour. Pretty much every model was on display, excepting the very large units above the S5. The new S4 with the 11" woofer instead of the 8" woofer and 8" sub was there and playing, as well as the new Mastering Piece 1. The MP1 has a deep, shiny black glossy finish and a controlled, revealing response that surpassed even the S5a (which plays a bit louder and has tons of punch). What can I say? I want 5s to mix on and enjoy with loud music, and the MPs for that extra-critical dimension. Congrats to Dave and Klaus!!! http://www.adam-audio.de Marquette Audio Labs are there showing their custom rack-mounting solutions for older Neve, Telefunken, Filtek/Ant modules, as well as the Mercury gear, and their own remakes of the Telefunken V72 and V76 tube mic preamps... I don't have Marquette's URL handy, but it might be linkable from http://www.mercury-rev.com Dangerous Music is there with their summing amp/line mixer, as well as a new device, the Monitor, which combines many functions in a single unit... http://www.dangerousmusic.com Everyone (well, at least I) will want the JL Cooper CS32 MiniDesk. It is a tiny USB/MIDI 32-channel hardware control surface for Alsihad and will run with other platforms as well (I asked as I use DP3). Alongside a single large rotary dial for data entry, there are 32 short-throw faders (well, without knobs or caps; just the little shaft-ends protruding a tad above the surface) with three buttons per channel, and more. It is really small. It's also going to list for $350.00. http://www.jlcooper.com Grace showed their fine-looking gear (which I'm told sounds great as well). I'm not certain what is new from them; the Lunatec V3 is a piece which combines DC powering, two mic pres, and A/D conversion.. http://www.gracedesign.com LINN are there with their very high-end audiophile products. Heart....beating faster... But no sign of the legendary LP12 turntable :-( http://www.linn.co.uk Speck were showing their ASC EQ, and noted that most folks order theirs with the transformer option installed. As such, their new half-rack MicPre 5.0 offers a switch to allow the choice of Active or Transformer'd outputs. It also acts as a DI, and several units can be chained together for remote purposes. http://www.speck.com SPL have developed a new 120V internal operating voltage technique which provides 116dB of SNR and 150dB of dynamic range with an additional 34dB of headroom for their new MMC1 Mastering Console and the PQ mastering EQ. The PQ lists at $12,000.00 and is packed with features including the choice of constant or proportional Q for each of the five bands per channel, on each channel separately if desired, as well as motorized pots and full recall, and pure Class A discrete circuitry. They don't have a URL on their literature. Anthony DeMaria Labs were showing the new ADL 670, which "has matched part for part the specs and sound of" the classic Fairchild 670. "No corners were cut" according to the literature. It is a very large, imposing piece of gear... I'll try to get a listen tomorrow. They have a Fairchild 670 there for A/B'ing! $18,500.00. http://www.anthonydemarialabs.com (The fold-out literature has a typo that I'm sure they're aware of... On the preceding page is the ADL-300G "Discrete Stereo Tube Direct Box". The ADL 670 is on the next page, as is the subtext, obviously cut-and-pasted: "Discrete Stereo Tube Direct Box". Guys, you knew someone was going to mention it.. At least it gets you some free advertising!) I only glanced at the Kurzweil booth, but it appeared that they had two new single-rack space FX units with names instead of numeric monikers. Roland were showing among other things the new MC909 ultra-beyond-groovebox-its-a-workstation thingie.. Line 6 have the Pod XT (or XD?) There of course is more, but that's what I was interested in today so that's what you get to read about. (Can you tell that I have little use for software for music?) I've posted this in a few places. Feel free to post it elsewhere if you like. -Mike Peake _________________ "Give me the ANALOG and no one gets HURT" -Linear Technologies promotional shirt
--------------------------- /Mats

All, I think the AMS-Neve 1081 remote controllable stand alone mic. preamp units are going to be a hot item. Apparently they can be controlled from a host computer, or the 88R recording console so the use of the unit via remote control is not isolated to being controlled only from the 88R. Not a bad business strategy from AMS-Neve being that there's a whole slew of Neve outboard clones out there. This should cause that revenue stream to return back to them. Threshold.

Very Cool!!!!! Universal Audio Debuts 6176 Channel Strip Combines the 2-610 Microphone preamp and 1176 compressor October 6, 2002 Universal Audio, manufacturer vintage audio reproductions and DSP powered plug-ins debuted their new 6176 channel strip to attendees of the Audio Engineering Society Convention in Los Angeles. The 6176 combines Universal Audio's two most successful products-the 2-610 microphone/instrument preamplifier and the 1176LN compressor-into a single "channel strip" product. The 6176 features several improvements over the standalone 2-610 mic preamp and 1176LN compressor. "While we're known primarily for painstaking reproductions of vintage gear," said Universal Audio Chief Analog Designer, John Hinson, "with the 6176 we allowed ourselves to add new features and take advantage of components with superior specs over the originals. For example, the mic preamp now features a 15db pad and a beefed-up power supply that tightens up the bass. The compressor section still has the twenty micro-second attack time and program dependency of the original 1176, but it is much quieter. Vintage character with modern specs is what we were going for and I think we've hit it. It's the best of both worlds." The 6176, a single, horizontal rackmount unit, has a suggested US retail price of $2,495 and will begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2002. Peace.
