4-year, 1-year or 5 weeks, how much do you need?

Does a 4 year degree in audio help you in this industry? Is a diploma good enough? How do people that attend a 1 year program stack up to graduates of a 4 year programs...What about a 5 week program? Is there a difference in their skill, or maybe their attitude?

A "4 year degree in audio" better come with 'composition', 'arranging', and some pretty heavy 'music theory'...with a side order of 'Electrical Engineering'. Most 4 year schools are designed for the kid to hide for 4 years, drink heavily and get laid while figuring out what the hell they might want to do with their life.

If you really want to get into audio, then the best way is by working in audio. A one year pogrom is a basic introduction that might accelerate you from 'floor sweeper' to 'room runner' a month or two quicker. The '5 week' plans are good enough to get you a 'floor sweeper' gig.

The whole thing hinges on the kid and the sincerity of their motivation. This is an art as well as a science...you can learn the basics of the technical aspects in one of these places, but you can only learn the art by doing. You can read a book on Cunnilingus but until you get down to it you're just not going to be able to do it properly. That too is an art.

There are thousands of kids hiding out in art schools for the wrong reasons, just as their are thousands of kids hanging out at recording schools for the wrong reasons. One of the most brilliant (visual) artists I know started his career "bombing" subway trains in the Bronx. He's gone from 'graffitti artist' to being shown in gallerys without the benefit of art school...it was all about his motivation. His work was just part of an exhibit that toured the country on 'Hot Rod Art'...seeing his work next to Von Dutch and Big Daddy Roth was a real trip...Boston's Museum of Contemporary Art seemed to think it was pretty cool, they hosted the exhibition for a couple of months.

Taking one of these courses should really prepare the kids for what they're going to hit in the real world...not how to run an SSL. They're not running one of those for a few years after graduation, there's no need to teach them that. What they need to learn is the difference between "balanced" and "unbalanced", +4 and -10, DOCUMENTATION, the purpose of a patch bay, and how one works...and most importantly...one scoop for each cup, one scoop for the pot (two if they're working with me).
