G. Ratte
Hi- today I'm looking to get started learning two things: 1. How to write counterpoint and 2. How bossa nova rhythms work So it should be a busy day. Are there any good sites chock full of theory and style info that aren't just ads for mail-order books? thanks! G. Ratte' G. Ethan Winer
G., > 1. How to write counterpoint and > 2. How bossa nova rhythms work I can't help you with (2), but for (1) find a book of Bach Chorales and study them closely. Bach was the original master of counterpoint. --Ethan The acoustic treatment experts Ethan's Audio Expert Book
dansouth
You can pick up a book of the Well Tempered Klavier at any large Borders or Barnes and Nobles store. Not a bad place to start. Be sure to pick up a copy of the CD's, too. Glenn Gould and Andras Schiff are both very good. For theoretical books, run a search on Amazon, bn.com, or borders.com and read the comments on each title. I found some amazing books on orchestration that way. Once you read up on counterpoint, roll up your sleeves and experiment. That's the only way to really LEARN it. For Bossa Nova, a logical place to start would be to purchase a couple of CD's that feature the music of Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim.
