Mick F. Cantarella
I'm looking for head phones that are flat and accurate, price is not a factor. For mixing and listening to music, not "cans" for studio musicians. Comfort is VERY important. Thanks a bunch for any recommendations. -Mick
Valkyrie Sound
I like my Sony MDR-7506 headphones. I mix live classical music through them and they work great! They are priced around $100. They've become such a common pair of phones that they are one of those items that never go on sale! http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/frown.gif I love reading GC ADs that say "all headphones 40% off except Sony MDR-7506s!". Hope that helps ya.... Valky Valkyrie Sound: http://www.vsoundinc.com Now at TSUTAYA USA: http://www.tsutayausa.com
Guest
A producer I recently worked with brought in a pair of Sennheiser phones that really impressed me. I believe they were HD630's (or 640's - sorry my memory is a bit weak.) I thought they were the most comfortable and pleasant sounding headphones I have heard. They cost @$350 so they aren't exactly cheap, but they were very accurate and translated well with Genelec 1031's.
Guest
On the recommendation of a well-known mastering engineer, I got Sennheiser HD600 headphones, which are fantastic. Very comfortable, accurate and durable, cost about 250$. Now that Cerebralborealis (great name by the way) mentions an even higher Sennheiser model, I'll have to check them out! After all, even 350$ is chump change for first-class musical gear- not so many links in the studio chain you can bring to the highest quality for so little money. Guest Room Warrior
For everyday monitoring use in the studio, I'm with Valkyrie on the Sony 7506's. Jim Bordner Jim Bordner Gravity Music "Tunes so heavy, there oughta be a law."
Dave Bryce
I've been using a pair of Stax Lambda electrostatic headphones (they call them Earspeakers) for about 15 years - they were about $400 when I bought them, and I have certainly gotten my money's worth out of them. They're simply superb, and unbelievably accurate - they actually have great bass response, too!!! Given that many people seem to feel that one of the major drawbacks of electrostatic speakers has always been that they're really directional, putting the technology into headphones seemed to be a very sensible move. I remember reading an interview with Chick Corea where he said that Stax phones were pretty much what he and his engineer used to mix on. jraffertyuswest.net
I would like the sony's but they are definately bright. The senheissers are open ear design. Does anyone know of a closed back headphone (for minimal phone bleed) that fits around the entire ear and was at least designed with the attempt of being flat? Thanks I would appreciate any info on this. -Josh.
Guest
Regarding my earlier post and ensuing confusion over the Sennheiser model # (Sorry): Some memory returns : the Sennheiser model# was HD600 and a similar model HD580 was @$100 less but said to be very close in sound and comfort. Also some pleasant sounding and very comfy closed-ear phones are DT831's made by Beyerdynamic and go for @$250. I heard some Stax Lambda's once and they did sound excellent but not quite as comfy over long periods as the others. The Sony 7506's sound too crispy on top to me also, but are useful for some slightly hearing impaired musicians. One of my favorites is a great sax player who always wants them and requests that he get his own headphone mix with the volume put on "stun". Scary, but works every time.
