Shure E1 Earphone Limited Recall

This is corporate news from Shure. I'm the PR Mgr.

 

Today, Shure announced a limited recall of the E1 earphone sold with our PSM series of person ("in-ear") monitors, also known as IEMs. The only units affected are units shipped from Shure between Sept. 22 and Oct. 20, 2000. We are recalling all 1300-plus units shipped in this timeframe. A total of 68 units are at issue.

 

The defect involves a tooling change by a supplier, resulting in the improper seating of an internal part, which could come loose and exit the sound port. Most likely, this would happen in transport. The result is degraded audio quality.

 

Of course, if the part (the acoustic damper) were to shake free while the unit was in use, it would then be in the user's ear. While this is unlikely, it is still a health issue, making this recall all the more important.

 

Shure is contacting all dealers who received orders and recalling them directly. However, our end users will much harder to find. We are asking the help of the touring sound community and giggers everywhere to help identify those with units requiring inspection and get them sent back to Shure -- at our expense, of course.

 

We will immediately inspect all units and (if necessary) replace any defective ones.

FAQ answers:

-All new E1's after 10-20-00 are individually inspected and are fine.

-All older E1's (shipped pre-9/22/00) are fine.

-The E5 dual-driver model is a different design and is unaffected.

-There have been no reports of health problems from anywhere; we're just being cautious.

 

Please - Help us track down these units and replace them!
