DC
Man, I bet it's hard to find heads that fit those Trixon kidney bean kick drums. -David http://www.garageband.com/artist/MichaelangelosMuse

D_dup3
What's the benefit of non-circular drum shapes? It obviously has some efect on the timbre...but is that the point? If so, what effect is sought; if not, what advantage do these designs offer?
Angelo Clematide
i think the sound was a little cumbersom and the kidney was impossible to tune. I had a drummer so in 1970, who was playing the speedfire set, and i recall the sound of his kick sounding multiphonic. it was mainly for show purpose -Peace, Love, and Potahhhhto
D_dup3
By "multiphonic", I presume that an overtone was really emphasized, Angelo. Was this a pleasing effect or was it clangorous, like bell overtones? Was it in any degree controllable, as by varying the tuning lug tightness? Angelo Clematide
d, by multiphonic i mean it had more then one root sound of near equal loudness. One was prominent when your beater hit the skin near the smaller curve and the other when you hit near the larger curve. It was common with the kidney kick that you played with two pedals. Yeas the sound was kind of a cluster. I think the drums i posted above are mostly misconceptions but very nice to look at. The VistaLite shells sound fabulous. Giannini makes hand made sets, he is a legendary drum maker in Zurich. I prefer equal tension on all skins on all drums, and the tuning for the kick just slightly above when it starts to produces a pitch. The small 18" kick i tune much higher for more rebound to play Be Bop. At the moment all SONOR makassar ebony, made for me in ca. 1980 and the only drums i own at the moment. -Peace, Love, and Potahhhhto
