tjryan
I'm getting a set of drums for my studio and I would lke to solicit some opinions on these two sets. 1/ Gretsch Renown Maple 2/ Yamaha Stage Custom Nouveau Any thoughts? Tony
ihategarybettman
I never played the Gretsch kit, but I'm a sucker for Yamaha bass drums. If I could justify the expense (and keep my wife from killing me), I'd upgrade from my Tamas to the Yamaha Oak Customs.
freelance
I've always been a fan of the "warmth" of Gretch drums - but Yamaha are also very decent. I would likely go with the Gretch myself. To some degree it depends on what you what the drums to do. I think the Stage Customs have a little more projection and mid/high attack (more of a "pop/funk" sound) - whereas the Gretch has a little more lower end and less projection (good for jazz and possibly for rock - but may need to be mic'd). I don't know how durable the Gretch hardware is. I do know Yamaha hardware is very decent.
ice flower
I think TAMA is nicer. TAMA's bass drum is better.
coyote
I dunno about that. The drummer in my band has a Tama dbl bass kit. He has to stuff the bassdrums with blankets to get a sound he likes.... my Yamaha Stage Custom bassdrums sound awesome with no muffling whatsoever. Bill G.
I absolutely love Yamaha drums. I've owned Ludwig, Tama, and Pearl. I NEVER have to tune the Yamahas. Set'em and forget'em. The Pearl's were the worse. I couldn't play a single set without bottom lugs falling on the floor, and the top lugs coming loose. - Bill
ss
If the drums will be used in the studio I would look into a birch drum kit. Its been my experience that studio owners in my neck of the woods prefer birch as opposed to maple. Now for playing live gigs I would choose maple.
