cruzbass
I have heard of a rythmic encyclopidia titled "the new breed". I hear that this is what alot of famous virtuoso drummers used in their studies. Does anyone have this book? whats in it? were can i get it? StumpyJoe
The "New Breed" is a book by Gary Chester. You should be able to find it at a reasonably established drum shop or at Amazon - search under author name. It's a good book. It really helps develop independents. It'll definitately challenge you to think about playing differently. Good Luck.

The New Breed is a series of increasingly complex 'systems' - there is a repeating figure that you play with 3 limbs while you READ a 4th part with the remaining limb. The reading also progresses from simple quarter note stuff to very complex syncopation. There are thousands of possible permutations of exercises. It starts out simple but pretty soon you find yourself being amazed that you are actually capable of doing this stuff. This book is so hard it hurts, but it really will do wonders for your independence.
