Prague
I need a field drum sounding snare. The best examples I have found are either the Kansas or Jethro Tull drummer. What are they using? Song examples: Kansas - No One Together (Phil Earhart) Jethro Tull - Warm Sporran (Barriemore Barlow) I can provide small audio files (or can I post them here?). I will then need a Halen "Panama" snare.
djarrett
How did I miss this? Here is my suggustion. Typically ... these drums are old wood shell marching drums. Slingerland (pre TDR) with wire snares ... not gut. Also, Ludwig marching is good as well. You may also find a real deep snare from the late 70's early 80's. For a while, they were making drumset snares that were 8 to 10" deep. Try ebay or local pawn shops. DJ
Prague
Hey, thanks. I almost forgot about this, myself. I haven't heard many drummers that use the sound I'm describing. Take a listen to the tracks I mentioned. Very beefy snares. I don't know why this sound hasn't been used by other artisits. I may not be aware of them, though. It seems Van Halen used something slightly different, I think. Maybe he had a tighter head and tighter snares? A bit more thwack to the sound. offramp
Al had a 'toong' to his snare, which was due in part to a metal snare drum with Ludwig Black Dots and no muffling, save for a triangle of electrical tape on the batter head (at least for a few years). I've upped my standards; now, up yours.
