Donnie
People often poke fun at Ringo about his lack of chops BUT for a rock feel he was/is one of the best. Don't believe me? Just try to play the opening lick to "A Day in the Life" right with Ringo! Also while we are on drummers.....stepping on soap box for a min......Carl Palmer and Stewart Copeland get my vote for two of the best ever. Two pieces I always have my more advanced students "try" to play with are "Don't Stand so Close to Me"/Police (try to find "1" in the begining And "Lucky Man" by ELP (Carl Palmer). Note: try to place the last three hits of the piece right with Carl! If you can play these two pieces right with these guys you are doing something right! dc

Yep. Strawberry fields has some amazing impossible fills, too. And Keith Moon on... tough to pick a song... I'll go with I Can See For Miles. coyote
I love Ringo. Simple, solid, great feel. There are folks who say he just got lucky - that he signed at the right time. Is it possible that his addition helped put the band over the top? By all accounts, he was a star in his own right before he signed with them. As for Palmer, it must be noted that he sometimes rushes his fills! That minor caveat aside, he is obviously one of the hottest drummers out there and has been since the late 60s. I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist. This ain't no track meet; this is football. KenElevenShadows
I like a lot of drummers, but John Bonham is definitely up there. I like Moon for personality, Mitch Mitdhell, Stewart Copeland, Manu Katche.... D_dup3
Catch the openning salvo of Funkadelic's "Cosmic Slop" (by Tiki Fullwood, I think). Now that's how you set the tone .
randy clay
How about Vinnie Cailuta (spelling?) He's on a live album recorded direct to disk with Tom Scott and a BIG band (Victor Feldman, Greg Philiganes et al) He is just sooo good, lots of different feels and nails every one of them. Just an awesome drummer.... my 2 coppers I'm trying to think but nuthin' happens....
KenElevenShadows
I forgot to mention tracks last time. Okay, most of the Bonham tracks. "D'yer Mak'er" has some monstrous tracks. Anyone know how that was recorded? "Achilles Last Stand", largely because of what he is playing. Almost any Police song. Freakin' amazing drumming. Ian Paice "Burn". Wow. I don't know -- what's a really great Moon example? That guy is so good, but I can't think of one particular stand-out example. What I like about all of these guys is that they were all super-distinctive and just so much *personality* in the tracks. Mitch Mitchell playing on "Fire" is another one. So many....Elvin Jones... Gulliver
I would second: Jan Paice's drumming on "Burn" (my favourite song by Deep Purple, btw!). I am back.
