techristian
Even though I seldom used double bass drums on stage, they are a good way to learn co-ordinated independence and they expand your PALETTE of chops. I think if I record some new music with double bass drums , I'll start with the drums first and build a groove around the beat. Besides Billy Cobham ,I haven't heard much application of double bass drums. They can be overpowering and cluttered if not applied properly. You can't just stick them in anywhere. I already have some doublebass video at my website, but I'm planning to put up some better stuff soon. I'm on vacation this week and will be working on ,my "Bird Cam" boom so that you all can actually see my feet as well as my hands. By the time I videotape the lesson ,edit it and then encode it will be a few weeks though. D_dup3
One interesting possibility is the use of two differently sized drums, to be played for the varying tones. As far as the standard double-bass set-up, to me, it's usually overkill. KenElevenShadows
It's often overkill, but it really depends on the drummer, doesn't it? I like Lars' double-kick approach. It sounds right for Metallica. It scares the hell out of some people when we show up for gigs though. They see the two kicks and think they booked the wrong band. "Uhh, we thought you were a ska band." coyote
LOL - agreed! Were I touring with a heavy rock band with roadies I'd do two bass drums as well as two floor toms, two or three mounted toms, a bunch of cymbals, etc. But I'm not.... One bass drum w/ dbl pedal, one mounted and one floor tom, and a few cymbals and percussion toys is sufficient for every other situation. For me. And while I love double kick I don't use my double pedal all that often. It is nice to have around for those few times in a gig or jam where I do get inspired to use it Originally posted by drumtek: My double pedal is sufficient..... I used to think I was Libertarian. drumtek
I hear you, Coyote.... In the days of "youthful enthusiasm", I carried around 2 24" bass drums. I'm older, and (presumably) wiser now...! I also don't make a habit of "over-applying" both pedals, but, when the mood/music dictate, they're there.
keyd
I think double bass can be a beautiful thing when used tastefully.
