Passeist
I received some great advice about selecting a snare, now I'm curious about selecting a snare unit. I'm trying to produce a snare drum sound that has tons of snare sound, and relatively little crack or ring from the drum itself. A warm and rattling sound, fairly lush and subdued. More of a slap than a crack. The exact opposite of my metal snare which is tuned up high, has a jarring "CRACK!", and rings like crazy. I figure I'm looking at buying a wooden snare drum and replacing the standard snares. Any advice regarding particular brands, materials, etc? rlhubley
Puresound makes wonderful snares. They are between $25-$50 depending which model. Joe Porcaro either designed them, or helped to and is affiliated with the company. I've never bought them myself, but have played on many different drums that have them. It does make a huge difference. Plus they make different styles to suit the sound you desire. Wait a second, i think i just sold the idea to myself! I should really go pick some up! http://www.puresoundpercussion.com/
djarrett
Hey, RLH is correct. These snares are great. I have them on my DW snare and love the sound. They are reminiscent of the old Slingerland "Snappy" Snares. Try it ... you'll like it. DJ
