Lee Flier
I am pretty happy with all my gear at the moment. At this point, all I really want is for a great drummer to move into my house on a permanent basis. I guarantee there are a lot of "perks" that would go with this position, if the drummer is really that great. 'Nuff said on that. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif But uhhhhh... well anyway.... if I can't have that I guess I'd settle for some cool steel drums or a kettle drum. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Or a TAIKO drum! Now THAT would be cool, although I don't know if it would fit in my studio easily. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif OH YEAH! Is anyone familiar with cocktail drums? I saw my favorite local drummer last night. I'll be seeing him again tonight, not with his full band but doing a duet thing at a restaurant with one of his bandmates. He does this kind of thing every now and then, and I told him I'd bet he would really love to have a cocktail drum for those gigs. He'd never heard of one! So now I am kind of on a mission to find one for him. I know Yamaha and I think one other company make them new, but they're really expensive and anyway this guy is a vintage hound and I'd love to find an old one. Anyone know where I might be able to? --Lee This message has been edited by Lee Flier on 04-26-2001 at 04:03 PM

Try www.phattiedrums.com Also, go to Google and do a search for cocktail drums. There is even a small cocktail drum community site that has a forum, but looks like the last activity there was in February. Hope this helps! Hey, Truth! Start 'em young! That is great. I am going to try to find info for you on the bopkat kit . It is a real drumset made at 3/4 size and can be used well into the developmental years. Pots, pans, and tupperware. That is how I got my start and I bet many more drummers started that way. Of course, I still drum on everything I get my hands on. It keeps me in trouble! Thanks for the post. DJ
Lee Flier
Damn drummers, can't take 'em anywhere! Always drumming on tables, countertops, pots and pans... and forget taking a drummer to a Chinese restaurant, the chopsticks become drumsticks before you know it... OK, so I love it. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Hey guess what! I actually found the exact model of vintage cocktail drum that I was looking for and it's right here in Atlanta! Looks to be in perfect shape by the picture. Going to check it out tomorrow, wish me luck! --Lee
djarrett
Hey, Great Lee: What brand? Gretsch actually made cocktail drums as stock items in the late 50's and early 60's. Many other vintage brands as well. Good luck, and be careful. Be sure to check for cracks in the shell, and make sure that they have the pedal and pedal clamp. The cocktail drum is not much without the correct pedal! DJ
Lee Flier
Yeah, I was looking for either a Gretsch or a Slingerland. This drummer that I had in mind for it, plays a killer old Slingerland kit that he's had since he was 13 and is quite attached to. I used to know a guy in L.A. that played a 60's silver sparkle Slingerland cocktail drum and it was just da bomb. So I figured that would be just the thing for this guy. Wellll... I actually found that exact same model and it's local! It's in near mint condition according to the shop owner, whom I trust, and the pedal is not the original but it's an old Ludwig that was definitely made specially for cocktail drums. I will still be sure to check it out thoroughly, but how weird is THAT? I thought I'd have to go searching high and low to even FIND one. If nothing else I'll have fun drooling over this guy's collection at his shop. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif --Lee
Brenton Trott
A rack..............I have never been able to get everything in exactly the position I want, not to mention the amount of hardware we have to carry. I want a rack..................and an FX snare, ooh and maybe another kit so I can have one packed up ready for gigging and leave one in my practise room...........oh and I would like an electronic kit so I can have a play at 2am when I come home from a good night..........and of course some more cymbals (you can never have enough of them)...........but seriously the rack is the next thing on my list. Any of you folks use them? Brenton Cheers Brenton

felix stein
Racks...I don't use them...I used to set a bunch up in the music store and maybe they are ok for some but to me they are very 80's. I'm going to let you in on a little secret I have been keeping. I use the smallest hardware I can find. The stuff wobbles and flexes when one crashes or rides and makes it looks like the drummer is slamming when they are not! I just always thought that was cool and timeless. F.S. djarrett
Hey, Sidereal: I have one of the Jungle Snares and it is killer. A super drum for everything from "unplugged" sets to all out "plugged." I also play for an artist that does this real hip-hop song where I just lay the Jungle Snare on top of my 14" snare (right on top of the head!) It produces a very high side snare sound with the ching of the jingles, ... a very cool effect! Got to get you one! DJ

KlarkKentJr
DJ, I finally joined. First reply! Enjoyed our talk last week. It's funny that you mentioned cocktail drums b/c that was what is currently on my wish list. I think that playing standing up would go great w/what I am doing w/Hick'ry Hawkins and I am putting a three piece band together where I am singing lead, so again standing up and playing and singing would be cool. I would love to get the full set of Yamaha (Club Jordan) but as you said they are expensive. Well, I'll keep looking. Their is a cool drum store in Raleigh, NC called 2112 Percussion. I haven't been in there in a long time, but he used to have some cool vintage stuff and every now and then would have a cocktail drum or two. djarrett
Hey, KlarkKentJr: Glad you made it to the party! Welcome to Drum Talk. You will note in that thread regarding Cocktail drums that Lee Flier found a vintage cocktail in a store in Atlanta. (not far from Columbia) This would be cool with the stuff you are doing. Kinda a country "stray cats" thing! Nose around and see what other threads you can offer advice on! Thanks, DJ

lockbody
An acoustic set of drums (got an electronic kit). Now that I'm getting a house with a basement and some space around the neighbors, I'd like a real kit. Everytime I play my drummer's set, I'm blown away at the variations in tone/timbre/volume, you can get that simply aren't available on a digital set. Especially in a low-end kit like my DTXpess. Oh, the questions are a comimg. Bob

djarrett
Hey, I am still interested hearing about what drummers have on their wish lists! DJ
coyote
the list changed since I answered this over a year ago ;-) Got the chimes, Didn't get the tumbadora yet. But now I'm eyeing a whole new set - the Yamaha Custom Standard (custom standard? LOL) set w/ 20" bassdrum. Man, those drums sound great! They look great too, and they're very affordable compared to most drums which sound/look like that. One thing I wanted was a hihat stand w/ swivel tripod so I could use it with my dbl bass pedal. However, I didn't want a heavy stand! I eventually took a hacksaw to my old CB700 lightweight hat stand and made exactly what I wanted. Lee Flier
Wow, that was pretty wild to see this thread again! In my first post to this thread I said: At this point, all I really want is for a great drummer to move into my house on a permanent basis. And then: I saw my favorite local drummer last night. ... which seems really strange now, because about a month after I posted that, completely out of the blue I ended up getting into a band. So now I do have a drummer on a permanent basis - OK so he doesn't actually live in my house , but he lives only about 10 minutes away and he comes over all the time to record and rehearse. AND (even weirder), he is the "favorite local drummer" that I referenced in my post! It is so cool to be playing with my favorite drummer, and a year and a half later I don't take it for granted one bit! So, wishes really can come true. I never did get him the cocktail drum. I did check it out, and it was really cool but needed quite a bit of work. We still do the coffeehouse setup sometimes, and our drummer does the stand-up thing with the kick, snare and cymbal so it's almost like a cocktail drum. Very strange to see this thread now, when I posted it little knowing how everything would turn out. So what's left on my wish list? Not much! I have a killer drum kit and an amazing drummer to play it, what more could anybody want? Hmmm... Well I could use a couple more great mics and preamps to record all this percussive righteousness! Yeah, that's it!
Brenton Trott
I've been working on my non percussion wishlist. I've bought lots of mics and stands and recording gear.
