Phil W
OK, it came up twice in this month's BP. Contributors wrote about tone controls being 'dimed'. What are they talking about - from the context I guess - turned down? Where does the word 'dimed' come from? Phil W
Closest US source I can get is - to dime - the verb meaning "to inform" (on someone) is 1960s, from the then-cost of a pay phone call. (www.etymonline.com) I guess it must be another meaning http://philwbass.com
TimR
Could they mean dimmed? Feel the groove internally within your own creativity. - fingertalkin
Phil W
hmmm p59 'the bass tone knob nearly dimed' - Bill Leigh p52 'Even with the onboard volume dimed' - Greg Olwell I don't think it's 'dimmed' Almostas obscure as 'woot'! http://philwbass.com
Big Daddy from Motown
Dimed means turned up to 10. Fender amp controls are numbered from 1 to 10. It means cranked to the max.
Phil W
Of course, man! Thanks - I should have cracked the cryptic code dime = 10 cents duh! P.S. We have volume controls that go up to ten over here too - but not coins called dimes. http://philwbass.com

Phil W
Do you know we were posting/editing at the same time Joe but our posts dovetailed fine?! I was even thinking of working in the 'Tap' joke to my edit - glad I didn't and left it for you. Great timing! http://philwbass.com
Bottomgottem
I would like to submit that the knob value of 11 henceforth be termed as "dimed and pence'd". Just a thought... My whole trick is to keep the tune well out in front.
