Pretty wild.

I had many encounters with the man, two of which stand out. The first time, he and his band played at my high school (mid-70s) and they were awesome. My drum teacher knew him and took me on the bus to meet him. Buddy was quite pleased with that performance, and a few guys on the bus were smoking joints and whatnot while we chatted.

The second time was not so pleasant. It was at the Blue Note in about 1984, and Buddy was soooo frustrated with his band that night that he was screaming at the piano player right on stage: "PLAY THE FUCKIN' TIME!!!"

I used to think I was Libertarian. Until I saw their platform; now I know I'm no more Libertarian than I am RepubliCrat or neoCON or Liberal or Socialist.

This ain't no track meet; this is football.

The short history:

Buddy Rich was a GREAT jazz drummer and bandleader who died in '87. He was known for a time as the "world's greatest drummer". He began performing in Vaudeville at an extremely young age (like around 2 years old). Led his own band from the 1930's on.

He was known not only as an excellent drummer, bandleader, showman, and perfectionist, but also as being a complete and total SOB towards the musicians that worked with him. It is really hard to determine what is fact and what is fiction, but once he reportedly fired a band member and put him off the bus in the middle of nowhere. His behavior became rather legendary among musicians. His final words, when asked by his nurse if anything was bothering him were, "Yes ... country music."

Info supplied by my drummer.

My whole trick is to keep the tune well out in front. If I play Tchaikovsky, I play his melodies and skip his spiritual struggle. ~Liberace

That country music part, i can attest to. My school band teacher phoned Larry king long ago, as he was friends with Buddy Rich. Buddy was on his deathbed in the hospital with Frank Sinatra sitting beside him when the nurse came in. After she asked the question, he popped one eye open, made his response, closed his eye shut, and died.

Quite a story, huh?

He was one of the greatest drummers of all time.

He kept his big band going long after all the other big bands folded.

No one said you had to be a nice guy to do that.

Tommy Dorsey once said, "The three worst sons of bitches in the world are Hitler, Frank Sinatra, and Buddy Rich - and two of them are in my band!"

But he could play and play he did his entire long life.

Well, I think Woody Herman was out there until his death in 1987 or thereabouts because I saw both for the last time some time around then. Woody actually was pretty ailin' but I guess the IRS was schtupping him bigtime.

And I saw Sun Ra with his big band a couple times after that, but that's almost like a timetable from another dimension anyway ; }

Buddy Rich was reponsible for teaching Johnny Carson to play. Carson didn't perform much (if at all) - it was something he did for fun.

I once saw Carson ask him if any drummer alive today was as good as he. He said maybe Carl Palmer (of ELP).
