guitar center had sales help tonight. it all started with shecky copasso wearing his badge from work. someone thought he worked there. that someone may actually be joining the forum... keep your eyes peeled. wraub and i sold a squier p-bass to a beginner and i'm pretty sure i sold someone else an ampeg.

the picks of the litter this evening were the spector 5 and (imho) the modulus 5. being a bonehead i didn't get the models but i'm sure someone else will pop up here with them. the Best Tone On The Ugliest Bass award goes to the MusicMan Bongo. ugly as sin, but that 18v dual soapbar really does kick ass. and i guess we're all kitten-kicking homophobic sexists because there was that REALLY sweet schecter we all loved.

gospel5 whipped out some slap chops and displayed a predeliction for the octave function on the SWR workingman. wraub again made us all look for the woodshed with anything he picked up and would've bought thr spector if it was green. nicklab and shecky spent the evening duetting on led zepplin tunes.

pictures to follow when i find some hosting.

Eeeeeehhhhhhhhh.

I just got back from this LDLD get-together, and everyone wasn't just cool, they were ice-cold! It was great to meet Tom, Ace Cracker, Gospel5 and Wraub. These guys are all incredibly solid players. And on top of that, the folks at Guitar Center were incredibly accomodating, too. Too bad they wanted WAY TOO MUCH for that Alembic Epic 5.

This was my first time meeting other lowdowners, and i must say that the "instant connection" that is spoken of is certainly a reality.

GC was great. Who knew that they would host LDLD gatherings without complaints? They were even polite when they threw us out when it was closing time.

I never knew that a "You don't have to go home but you have to get the hell out of here" could be delivered in such a polite manner.

wraub was inspiration for us to all hit the shed. tom got some video of him doing some slap stuff at normal speed then, then wraub slowed it down for us. He's only 10 excercises away from making his own slap bass dvd.

Everyone spoke highly of benloy in his absence (it's no wonder that fender made him his own bass).

I look forward to the gospel5, benloy bass off that will take place soon.

Quiznos was amazing. I've never had a sub that was so good.

Yep - another great NYC hang. Jason asked lots of questions about the board - natural questions about how one gets to be a moderator, why everyone is so positive, etc. Jason is a great kid with fine hands and a gentle spirit. J - thanks for gathering us together!

It was great to see wraub and ace again. Ace has his Ampeg sales thing down cold. Too bad that some of the equipment sounds like it's been thru the "crank it to 11" test. And as Ace says - wraub has lots of skills.

And I finally got to meet Nick. He was showing me techniques and fret positions (along with wraub) for Paul Simon's "Late In The Evening", which my band is picking up. Nick and I did play Ramble On together, as well as Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey and Something. On the Alembic, he's got the "pick with pick-hand mute" thing down cold. Nice sound!

We met Rohan, who usually visits TalkBass (our forum is soooo much cooler). He played well, and spent lots of time talking to us.

Wraub had to provide a meal at home, but the rest of us spent an hour at Quiznos doing damage to Angus beef sandwiches (Jason couldn't stop saying how great they were).

My kids got me a digital camera for Christmas just for these occassions. It arrived yesterday, and I see it's going to take me a while to figure it out. Apologies to Ace (I don't know why that red eye hit you and not others). And wraub - I deleted many photos of you that you'd want deleted.

Here's the group shot taken by Jess, who was a great help and who let us do our thing.

Tom, I had to laugh as I was driving home. Sure enough, I'm in the car and Q104 starts playing "Late In The Evening". It sounds like at the top of each bar, the bass player is playing two ghosted 16th's before going through the line. But that could've been the guitar player contributing to that effect.

Lies! LIES, I say! I liked the Lakland and the Alembic, fret dressing issues and all.

The spreading of luv has been noted.

Good work (or perhaps...good play!), gentlemen!

I'll see some of you this evening at the Chancer extravaganza. I'll go on record with the prediction that Maury will have some stiff competition from the deli meats for tonight's "highlight of the evening" award.

Peace.

Hey all, it was indeed a fine hang. The assembled group was a good one, all fine players, as noted.

GC was very gracious to have us, and put up with much silliness. Jason seems like a bright young man, full of interest and promise, good head on his shoulders, and a bright future ahead of him. And then there's Tom... :D

Seriously, Tom is a much better player than he'll ever let on. Busted out In a Gadda da Vida, with vocals, pretty groovy! Lots of Beatles tunes, as well.

Nick, likewise, is obviously a solid player with chops, and he's smart enough to hold 'em back in a crowded guitar store. Also knows many Beatles tunes.

And Jason can clearly hold his own, especially as he's not been playing all that long. Lots of promise.

Ace is even better as a bass player than a salesman, and I am pretty sure he sold that Ampeg (not counting the one he's going to buy :) ). Another player who's better than he'll let on.

The Spector was a definite highlight of the night IMO, such a lot of bass for so little! I liked the Alembic, lots of tones once you looked for them, and fairly easy to find a good sound. A horrible fret job, many proud frets, but still a player, with one of the thickest ebony 'boards I've ever seen. Personally, I hated the Bongo, didn't even like the tones from it. Cool colors, though. Played a sweet Music Man 4 string, but found again that I really don't dig the MM 5 string models.

As for the wood shed comments... Hey, I can slap a little. Oddly, of late I only do it in guitar stores... :) The older I get, I find it less musical, but it is fun. The slap video is in pre-production as we speak... :)

Took some pics, but I am unable to post them right away, due to practice/gig/job intrusions, but will do so ASAP.

Ace, call me re: pic hosting. I have a solution...

My thanks to everyone involved, I had fun.

When's the next one?

Peace,

wraub

I think it might have been one of the Asian models. Spector is having some basses built in Korea if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, the bass was a bolt-on, but I think the consensus was that the b-string was kind of floppy. I wasn't digging it that much, but it could've been that individual instrument. I played a similar Spector 6 earlier this year that was a little more impressive and in a similar price range. This one clocked in at just under $600, I think.

Oh yes - Spector was Korean. A guy in my band has a Korean 4, and it's lovely. That 5 last night was also quite nice. If I am remembering correctly, it had EMG PUPs.

I'm working on a Bass Loft visit on the first or second Saturday in Feb, with genuine Italian food afterward (the Loft is in Little Italy, don't cha know).

weird, if i can manage to stay single for the next month (gonna have to beat the ladies off with a stick), i'll probably be around for that meeting too.

explanation: the second weekend in feb is valentines weekend. Single=no g/f=no reason to stay in boston for that weekend.

I could probably swing a Saturday. I'm not sure exactly how I'm going to sell "I'm going to NYC and you're not; you're staying home with all three of my evil spawn by yourself!", but I'll work on it.

Looks like you guys had a good time. Sorry I couldn't make it, but I caught a horrible cold the day before I flew back to NY from CA and I'm just getting over it now (uuuugh...).

Glad to see everyone had fun!

Tom, the second Sat. in Feb. looks better for me at this time, rather than the first. I may be able to finagle the first one, but I wanted to let you know.

Again, looking forward to the Loft, just for my Dingwall jones... (<----sounds like a power forward, or something...) :)
