Alembic users...all this talk is tempting me

So I am looking (not real hard but keeping my eyes open) for a fretted 6 string. All this Alembic talk has me going a bit. There is what seems to be a nice 6 string Epic on eBay right now.

I have never heard or played one. I love the tone on the James Taylor "Beacon Theatre" DVD which is an Alembic. I know there are very "hi-fi" which would work well in church, but can they get funky as well? How about rock?

How does the neck feel? Can you compare to another maker?

Thanks for supporting my G.A.S. :)

Steve, didn't you ask us to intervene for these sort of things?

- Do you really need a fretted 6 when you have a fretted 5 and a fretless 6 and an upright?

- If you do really need a fretted 6, how much use will it get?

- If it won't get THAT much use, shouldn't you consider something a bit more budget conscious?

- Haven't we established that most of the sound comes from a player's hands (within limits)?

- How about a used Carvin 6 on ebay? They go CHEAP...

Oh NO you don't! Forget it, I will NOT be your enabler!

Go watch one of the nice DVD's we suggested a few threads back and STOP THIS MADNESS!

Let me rephrase that:

It's all in the hands.

Only faux-funk. Better off with some greasy old J-bass...

Hippie-sandwich? Not cool. P-bass compulsory.

U-shaped. Bad neck-dive.

I too will not! ;)

5-string fretted, 6-string fretless, & upright. I think you've got the basses covered!

Yeah, you guys are right. I guess it comes from liking my fretless 6 string a lot. I was thinking a fretted 6 would be nice, too. The whole use one position, less shifting, common ground, etc.

I have thought about a used Carvin as I am very happy with my Carvin fretless. I'd probably have to replace the electronics like I did with the fretless though. I guess that would still be cheaper than some fancy bass.
