What are You?

Just wondering. Saw a tag on a post that made me think...just fer a sec.

Bassist?

Electric Bassist?

Bass Guitarist?

Low End Master of all Creation?

or maybe "Super Elite Pro Bass Player(only)"

When I played more URB I rather insisted on being billed as Electric Bassist. Lately Bass Guitarist really sits better. Bassist is fine in really limited situations but a bit ambiguous as the field expands...

Thoughts?

Should be a poll but I don't like 'em.

Should note that I see a semantic difference in all of them.

"Electric Bass" associates one more closely with the URB.

"Bass Guitar" takes one back to the guitaristic thang Leo Fender intended.

"Bassist" - Well that could mean anything - tuba, singer....

y'know?

I prefer "Bassist".

Any guitarist can pick up a 4-string and be a "Bass Player", but it takes a certain type of person to be a "bassist".

That said, "Bassists" are not limited to bass guitarists. Many keyboard player's left hands understand the groove that makes a "bassist". Of course, it doesn't stop there either...

Me? I'm a bassist. (Formerly Bassist Extraordinaire).

If I got my name on the back of a CD for a band, I would have 'em put on "Lead Bass." Just for that Spinal Tap feel . . .

Geeky? Yeah, but all bassists are geeky...

Depending on the age of your audience, though, it may be lost on them.

Electric Bass is the name of the instrument that I play
Jeremy - A rare lapse on your part.

We, or most of us, play the "Electric Bass Guitar".

Not a bass viol

or a mandobass

or a bass saxophone

or any electric version of any of the above.

A Bass Guitar. (shudder)

The truth hurts.

I have always preferred "Bassist" but "Bass Player" is ok too. Just don't call me late for dinner! :)

I like to be titled a Bass Player, who plays an Electric Bass Guitar. :)

At least that's what I am right now. Later I may be calling myself something more colorful... like Queen of the Underworld. :thu:

i was in a band with a guy who's first ever electric guitar was a hondo. this thing was so horribly out of tune that we didn't even bother to call it a guitar. we just called it the hondo, eventually shortening it to hondo. the funny thing was that it was SO out of tune it was almost in tune in a different way and made some really interesting noises (along with being wraught with structural and electrical problems). itai played a solo on it on our demo and he was credited as Itai: guitar, vox, percussion and hondo.
Eeeeeehhhhhhhhh.

Hepnu,

I remember seeing album credits where the make of the instrument was included (sorry I can't put any to hand at the moment). Putting "Fender Bass" on the credit may have a retro feel to you (and people like us), but it won't mean much to the general public. And you're giving away the advertising for free!!

Bassist, Bass Player, and Bass Guitarist seem to have been used most often for me, and that's fine.

Call me anything but late for dinner :D

For me:

Dave Brown: Bass. (It's my handle)

I figure those who care, know what it means; those who don't know really don't want an explanation.

I also sing bass, so...

I always just say I play bass, but I have recently come to terms with the fact that what I play is a bass guitar ( again, that whole Leo, inventor of all that is cool with a bolt on neck and single coil pick-ups thing, preferably with an ash body, and a maple board...).

No more, no less, I play Bass Guitar.
