Music Groups going after Corporate/Deregulated Radio

Recommended Posts

Caught a bit about this on NPR this morning... It seems that about 10 different groups from independent artists to the RIAA are making a case against the deregulation of the airwaves and how it has paved the way for just a few huge companies to have sucked all the life out of radio... they say radio is anti-artist, anti-consumer, etc and that payola is still the name of the game... all apparently true. So what's the scoop? How can we get more involved it this? I personally hate corporate radio!

Yep thats it I especially like this quote... Since the radio industry was deregulated by Congress in 1996, Clear Channel and three other large station groups now account for 63 percent of the 41 million listeners who tune into "contemporary hit radio," or Top 40, program formats, the letter said. As a result, decisions about what songs get airplay have become increasingly centralized, it said. But Clean Channel spokeswoman Pam Taylor said airplay is based solely on research into listeners' musical tastes, and that research is what the labels, through independent promoters, are paying for. ... So they do these polls to see what people like... I've been subjected to a few of these polls myself. I'm pretty sure that they are taking no interest in the local music scene. That's my main issue. As a local artist, you could be selling a coupla thousand cds per year which ain't so bad IMHO, and still see virtually no airplay on your local airwaves. Except for maybe the "local music hour" on Sunday evenings at midnight, or possibly the request hour if your fans are crazy enough to call the station daily...

Pam Taylor/Clear Channel is FOS then - why the sudden resurgence of Boston? Did people just suddenly like it again or is it advertizing subterfuge? If there is a devil, it is mass media - and if not the devil, they are certainly a bunch of sleazy SsOS.
