Is the hi-hat a cliche?

Recommended Posts

like any drum - any instrument - the hi-hat is what one makes of it.

suggesting its removal, its over-use, its elegance or even its obscenity is usually the reflection of its last known state, or the ignorance of its critic.

from what i can tell, the first post in this thread is about someone discovering the ommission of the hi-hat from their own work.

but the vein of this thread flares in many different directions - thankfully, for that is what makes this place so fun.

omitting the hi-hat from any production/ensemble/composition for fear of abuse, cliche or wreckless abandon seems as absurd as any other suggestion which would prevent a thing so simple as a sound from being possible.

that prospect seems counter-intuitive to the very nature of our collective endeavor here.

however, the potential discovery which comes from asking such questions - along with perhaps any question... the process which naturally follows in open discussion among such a group, is what motivates so many of us to return again and again to these procedures.

why? what if? how about?
