Rim
.. it's called a drum kit! So I bought a used Pearl Export 5-piece drum kit from a friend (who bought it used from someone else). I also happened to buy a heart monitor last week to make sure my heart rate is in the "target zone" for fat burning while I work out. It got me thinking: can I keep my heart rate in the zone while playing drums? The answer, I found out tonight, is YES!!! My target zone is 106-136 bpm and I was able to keep an average heart rate of 124 bpm over the 30 minutes of playing drums non-stop. I had to keep playing a fairly fast tempo (but not manic) and keep the kick and hihats moving (since the legs are the largest muscles) to get into the zone, but what fun! I am out of shape, though, so it doesn't take too much get my heart rate up. And I'm not a real drummer. Any real drummer actually measure their heart rate while playing? aka riffing Double Post music: Strip Down http://rimspeed.com http://loadedtheband.com

Blue Strat
I thought about that too. Drumming has to be good excercise, cause you never see any fat drummers... BlueStrat a.k.a. Rim
I keep trying to make workouts fun for me because I tend not to keep up with it - and I like to eat. I did try playing guitar while on the treadmill but it worked only for walking speed so I don't think I was working out hard enough. Then again, I didn't have a heart monitor back then so I may try it with it and see if I can keep within my zone. I know singing while on the treadmill ups my heart rate a little. The heart monitor is a cool little gadget - it keeps track of calories burned and time exercised for about a week's worth of workout so it helps motivate me. At least so far. DC
Rim, you're inspiring me to get out my little 60's Ludwig drum kit. I do love banging on those things, just need to set up some loud speakers and a CD player close so I can play along and get back in shape. Super 8
I never thought of drumming as being much of a workout. Maybe it has more to do with experience and developing fine motor skills. Drumming is fairly effortless for me anymore. My wrists and fingers do all of the work. My forearms are more or less along for the the ride. Still, it's probably a lot better excercise than playing keys. Those fat bastards hardly work at all! Super 8 Hear my stuff here
Kendrix
I have a vision of a Richard Simmons video and weight looss plan "Eat to the beat". Cant you just see him wailing away at some Barry Manilow tunes while the fat just burns away. Damn. I just bought a new treadmill. For what i paid i could have had a really decent set of drums. Larry London was HUGE (probably around 300+ pounds). He played on a a bunch of Motown sides, drummed for Elvis on his last couple of tours and was the number one session drummer in Nashville during the 80s. I saw him perform at one of Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jams and he was sweating so much I thought he was going to have a stroke. He was a rocking drummer though! Sp3nc3r
I seem to recall Vinnie Paul from Pantera being a bit chunky - not that that made him any less of a player. And playing drums didn't help Bill Ward. Didn't he suffer a (thankfully non-fatal) heart attack a few years ago? Healthy my ass!! Cheers! offramp
Abe Laboriel is not exactly slim. Strikes me, also, that Vinnie Colaiuta had a sizeable gut in one of the Sting videos. I've upped my standards; now, up yours.
Jedi
Congrats Rim. My first drumset was a Pearl Export. They're great. The drums on the second song of the Cd I gave you are Pearl exports. Before long, you'll be playing drums for your tracks and losing pounds as well. How you like those apples. "All conditioned things are impermanent. Work out your own salvation with diligence." Blue Strat
The "no fat drummers" comment was a joke. However, there are a lot of skinny guys that play drums too. BlueStrat a.k.a.
