NSD: New Synth Day - Modal Argon 8m

Recommended Posts

I know, it's not a new Pedal, or Amp, or Guitar, but I did buy it for my Guitar rig, so I guess that counts for something?

A friend recently offered me one of these - Modal Argon 8m - at a price I really couldn't afford to turn down. It has a number of features I'd been looking for, especially the onboard Sequencer, and it's compact enough to use with my live rig.

While a number of Synths are designed to emulate the sounds of real-world Instruments, the Argon isn't one of those. It's a Synth, one that makes really beautiful, and sometimes really weird, Synth sounds. In particular, it makes sounds that move, which is the main attraction for me. Anyone who had any experience with the Korg WaveStation series*, imagine combining a WaveStation with a Sequencer and you're close.

I try to grab little bits of time between jobs to dig into it, but I've been busy since the beginning of March, and I'm looking at three catering jobs in the next four days. It's been good work, and I'm more than grateful, but I'd love a weekend or something like it, to just sit on the floor and turn knobs. Maybe in July?

*I have a WaveStation SR, and I love it. The WaveStation series in particular was made to be MIDI Guitar-friendly, because at least one member of the design team was also a MIDI Guitarist!!!

If it's anything like a Wavestation it is one very bitchen synth. Congrats on the new axe.

ps: I definitely liked what I heard on the Sweetwater demo. I'd say a perfect score for Novparolo.

I finally have some time at home, dog-sitting, so I've had a little more time to dig into the Argon. Just to start with, there are 500 Factory Presets to listen to, and that's before I start turning knobs.

Right now, I'm controlling it through my Roland GR-33, which has the best feature set, and CC access, of all my Guitar Synths. I have both the Argon and the GR-33 plugged into my small Mixer, so I can start working on sounds specifically designed for use with my Hex PU-equipped Guitars, and sounds meant to blend together.

To be honest, I need the distraction, right now, and it's a very good time for me to be home. It's also evil hot, 90's to low 100's for the next 10 days or so; not a good time for landscaping. If you're under this heat dome, too, I wish you cool nights, and no power outages!
