Good information, thanks for the reminder!

 

Of course the focal length of the lens is an aspect of composition and sometimes compromises are made on behalf of the vision of the Artist using the camera. 

That said, you are absolutely correct regarding evenness of light. 

It took a chunk of my life to get here and I am still not sure where "here" is.

Yeah, this article is simply on describing the Inverse Square Law, not so much composition or focus length choices. Nice and short article that makes it easy. 

 

The focal length can sometimes make it very very challenging to light paint exactly where you want and at particular distances. This is largely true the wider you go. Fisheye lenses are notorious for making it hard for you to light paint without inadvertently shining the light directly into the lens, for instance. But part of light painting at night is also problem-solving, and that's what makes some photos especially astonishing if you know how to light paint.
