I don't even need to listen to it to know it's gonna be a DX7. Bell + 80s/early-90s is GOING to be FM. That's kind of what FM does. Everything sounds like a bell... pianos, basses, leads. It's all F*#%ING BELLS! lol

My first keyboard was a DX7, I still have nightmares.

Puck Funk! :)

Equipment: Laptop running lots of nerdy software, some keyboards, noise makersâ¦yada yada yadaâ¦maybe a cat?

Lol. My pal Tony (Tonysounds) said the DX7 made his teeth hurt.

The D-50 had its share of bell sounds, as well.

Soincally, the 1980s went from analog synth brass, strings and pads to clangorous bell-like sounds courtesy of digital synths. :)

One had to be there in order to enjoy the noisy ride. They put that clangy sh8t on everything as if it was Frank's hot sauce. :D

That led to making brotha Tony's teeth hurt and bringing out brotha Moe's trebuchet.:cool:

Listening to the section over phones, I'm not hearing the harmonics associated with bell patches. Sounds to me like a simple bright mono saw layered over the pads. Should be able to get it with practically anything.

FWIW, the Motif XF has a patch called "Queens" that pretty much nails that sound. Another one called "Queen Of Pop" that's similar. The Queens patch is just 2 somewhat subdued PWM string sounds in stereo, layered with a digital bell waveform. The Queen of Pop patch is several layers of fairly bright PWM pads in octaves. I believe most any modern synth has some variation of that sound. If not it can be pretty easily constructed using the ingredients I mentioned. :keys2:

^ It's a mono lead line over the pads though, so it would be very difficult to pull off unless laid down in a separate pass.

It's a highpassed saw and I'm sticking with it  Seriously it could also be from any number of synths with digital waveforms... anything nice bright and pingy over the top. Plenty of choices by the late 1980s... good Lord this track is over 30 years old now. How'd I get so old? :D

I still hear a lower FM sound in there. The high-passed saw you're hearing might've been from any number of Roland synths of that era, though I may be projecting a preference here; I often layered my TX802 with an MKS-80. Of all the analog synths and rack stuff I sold off in the early 2000s, that Super Jupiter - w/programmer - is one piece of kit I wish I'd kept  .
