mauriziodececco
Hallo, i saw some videos of this ring controller, and seems a nice way to add expression to you good old keyboard. The problem is that is expensive enough (400 Euros) to prevent a complete impulse buying so the question is: do anybody actually touched/tried/bought one ? Any direct experience ? Any well founded or not so well founded opinions ? Maurizio Quote Nord Wave 2, Nord Electro 6D 61,, Rameau upright, Hammond Pro44H Melodica. Dr Mike Metlay
I played with it at NAMM, as well as watching a demo from a staffer who had a lot more practice with it. The TECHNOLOGY works brilliantly. Very seamless and non-glitchy. The TECHNIQUE? That will be the kicker. People who are used to keeping their hands on the keys are going to have a hard time adjusting to something that goes off every time you lift your hand. I think that we'll need to see an in-depth study of things like dead zones (built in to avoid accidental triggering), or programmable effects that follow from simple horizontal movement up and down the keybed for au ruban effects and the like. (I'm volunteering, but I can name at least three guys on this forum who might be better choices, sigh) Dead zones and sensitivity in various directions are going to be critical. I think a lot of folks will start with very simple on/off gestures and work their way up; it seems very fluid and natural when you watch a video of someone doing it, but so does Clara Rockmore playing the theremin. Returning to my first point: it works. It works well, well enough that Roland got its hands into Enhancia very fast and was demonstrating the Neova in its booth after announcing a full-on partnership (absorption, as with V-Moda?). And for some people, $400 will be way cheaper and more modular (use it on any keyboard) than buying an MPE controller. We shall have to see. No easy answers for the early adopter, yet.
