Transistor organs archeology

Recommended Posts

I have a friend in Ancona (Italy, the electronic instrument region) doing Urban Exploration.

He found (and left there !) a RIHA PHILHARMONIC organ in a abandoned factory (photos on demand :). Apparently, the factory was somehow related to Elka.

So, what a Dutch organ is doing in a Italian organ factory ?

Was bought to study the competitors, or there was some kind of collaboration between Elka and Benelux Musical Instruments ?

I found almost nothing in the Internet about this particular organ, and very little information on those times; after all, well before the Web explosion (early 70s).

Just out of curiosity, does somebody in the forum knows better ?

How cool! I find urbex fascinating but I can't bring myself to get involved, it's just too crazy for me!

That's an interesting place for it to end up, and my first thought is like yours, they were studying the competition. It could also be that Benelux instruments were built by Elka - or vice-versa and Elka were checking Benelux's work for quality control? Like the guitar factories in Indonesia and Korea that make guitars for loads of different brands, it's not hard to imagine the same for making home organs. Particularly given the number of specialist craftsmen you need to make them: electronic engineers for the guts, mechanical engineers for the actions, cabinet makers, electrical engineers for the amplifiers and speakers... Getting all those people in one place is hard.
