Erroll Garner plays "Misty"- new release

Jazz+

Released just this year (2016) for the first time. Erroll Garner composed "Misty" and always played it in Ab and embellished it differently every time.(Eb was the key pop singer Johnny Mathis made it famous in and appears in fake-books.)

This recording session is from around 1970, much later than his other interpretations of the same song. The early 70's was during Garner's third and final great period of stylistic development where he became more experimental and employed continuous dotted quarter notes in his offset left hand pattern. He died in 1977 and unfortunately was virtually forgotten by the jazz academies. The rubato introduction is especially nice.

The rubato Intro chords are:

C-11 G- C-

Ab-7

Gb 69

F-7

E7#9

Bb-7

A7b9

Here's another track from the same new release (Ready Take One, 2016), All of the tracks were recorded around 1970 but never released before.

"Wild Music" is a bluesy Latin funk tune in A minor composed by Erroll Garner.

Garner was prolific composer who wrote many tunes in this Latin jazz hard bop style and also a large number of ballads similar to Misty. Sadly he was almost forgotten by the jazz academies after his death.
