Youtube is one of my favorite resources for just about everything. I can review cars, motor homes, boats, guns, guitars, pedals, PA's, news stories, guitar lessons, old music, new music, all kinds of demos, animals, history, writing tips, favorite artists, how to's etc. If you can think of it, you can find it! +1 million on Youtube! :thu::thu::thu:

That pretty much sums it up. A lot of times when I'm looking for a certain song I run across a version covered by someone else or some local band somewhere.

Les Paul Studio Deluxe, '74 Guild S100, '64 Strat, JCM 900 Combo, Peavey Classic 30 1x12, Peavey Classic 30 Head, CBG

I have to say, youtube is getting less and less wiggle room from here. Pretty much every week someone posts a video, and trying to watch it produces a message that `such-and-such a company has blocked this video in your country on copyright grounds`. Right or wrong it makes watching some things impossible.

Same old surprises, brand new cliches-

There are all kinds of copyright infringement lawsuits against Youtube. So far Youtube has been successful defending their site and ability of their posters to post all sorts of copyrighted videos, music, movie clips, etc. Even the Viacom case decided in favor of Youtube is still in the appeals process. Many of the videos and other copyrighted material is taken down if requested by the artist, their estate or other legal representatives.

There are ways around the blocked videos but it seems like YouTube is working at keeping ahead of things all of the time.

Firefox has add-on/plug-ins that get around it one way or another.

You have to act fast before they are taken down though.

I downloaded a great live video performance a while back and it is currently nowhere to be found online.

Rare audio of live material is much easier to find. There are quite a few sources. I don't like Googling and being lead to a YouTube video only to discover it is audio with some stills like a slide show. Most people that post on the YouTube pages seem to be unaware that the audio is around and can be downloaded.

There are 3 songs that were done by white guys that I had always thought were done by black artists. The 1st time it happened was about 10 years ago and I was watching some old Doo Wop on PBS. The song was The Lion Sleeps Tonight by the Tokens. The second time it happened was about 5 years ago and I was looking up a song on Youtube (as I thought I could do a bluesy version of it) and the song was The Stroll by the Canadian group The Diamonds. This last week I'm back on Youtube as a blast from the past came to me I was thinking about learning a song and it happened again with Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye by The Casinos. Not trying to get racial here but there are things you discover in old videos and record covers that may surprise you. I love old Blues, Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Jazz and Rock N Roll. The music just brings us together...

I really appreciate the videos of the old artists doing originals, but I also dig just having all that info in one place even if it's just an album cover or a 45 playing with the original version on the video...I don't have to google around the clock to find what I'm looking for. LOL

You are going to miss a lot of what is available. Besides, even if you don't venture outside of Youtube you still use a search engine unless you only rely on the associated videos that pop up on the side of something you happen to discover.

Plus the sound quality is inferior on Youtube. A lot of the audio (slide shows) are taken from mp3's. There are some flac versions of old bootlegs, converted from original sources of course, but if it makes it to Youtube it has been compressed. If the source was an mp3 it is a compressed file of a compressed file. Being a video format the compression degrades the audio to a greater extent because of the intent to reduce a larger file size. And you have to stream it in order to listen to it.

So far, I've been able to find just about anything I'm looking for on Youtube. I don't really call up Youtube videos for listening to music or for the quality of the recordings. I mostly use it for research and will post some of the clips from time to time for friends in emails and on the forum. Most of the music I listen to, is on the radio or on CD's and DVD's that I have purchased. I have also found that the music does sound better on Youtube if you use earphones...+1 on there being a lot of inferior old bootlegs along with a lot of covers and other crap. I just have to wade through some of it to find what I'm looking for...

ps. just recently a friend returned from the orient and told me of a Youtube clip posted in another country of him playing in a back street bar with an unknown business owner. I was able to find the needle in the haystack just by knowing my friends name and sent him a copy of what he couldn't find...as Huell Howser would say "It's amazing!"

I didn't mean to start a discussion on the relative merits of YouTube.

I was just happy with finding live recordings of this incarnation of the Jeff Beck Group. I had no idea they even toured. I love the Truth album, so having some of that material live just made my day.
