Guitarist needs guide to care of old Peavey T-40 Bass.

I thought I'd ask some of our 4-& 5-string buddies in here for some guidance. I recently got an old Peavey T-40 Bass from a friend who needed to offload some gear. Everything works, no issues with the neck or the electronics, it was just checked out and pronounced good. I just want some advice on strings, and basic care & maintenance. I was also wondering if there's book on Bass, that's the equivalent of Ralph Denyer's Guitar Handbook.

Not sure of the year, but I know the T-40 was only available from around '79, until maybe '83? It's got a Natural finish, maple neck & fretboard, Ash body IIRC, all the original parts, and the OHSC. It seems like the T-40 is a "love-it-or-hate-it" instrument, with a bit of a following, which I only learned after I got it. I was just happy to get a U.S.-made Bass for what I'd have paid for a new Epiphone, or a really low-end Fender, and I like the variety of tones I can get from it. Anyhow, any help, guidance or suggestions would be appreciated. Of course, if you happen to fall on either side of the love-it/hate-it debate, I'd be interested in hearing your opinion. I'll be thudding away, in the meantime.

There's actually quite a following for these. General consensus is that although insanely heavy, it's one of the best things Peavey ever did. Fwiw, iirc it was one of the first USA made CNC built instrument (along with the matching T-60 guitar.)

As a bass player, I suggest you go to over to talkbass and dig around (or just google into it.) Many ardent fans over there, bordering on rabid at times.

Also, as a bass player, if I had the cash, I'd try to buy it from you... ;)

I'm a lot more like I am now than I was when I got here.

Thanks, everyone. I have tried doing a Google search, and got some help, like finding the manual, which you really need, in this case. Somebody got real creative with the electronics, letting you dial in single- or double-coil sounds.

I'd been holding off posting this in the Lowdown, because I thought I'd get bogged down in the "It's great/they suck" debate. That seems to be a lot of the web action surrounding this particular model.

@Haywired2 - thanks for that link. That one didn't come up in my Google search, but I've bookmarked it, now.

@Wraub - I'll keep you in mind if I ever sell it. FWIW, there were maybe half a dozen of them on the GC Used Gear listings, a few weeks ago, but none right now. I'll keep an eye out.
