Privia PX-3S As Master Controller

Jaime Chimuelo

Recommended Posts

I am so use to using the BCF2000 as my MIDI CC automation device from prgm change messages, to effects AUXs and Channel FX being automated that I hate to change course, and while I love my Privia for being a 4 zone Master MIDI COntroller, I have difficulty using the up down and 1-8 matrix for prgm chng messages.

I cannot seem to find the area in the maual that explains how to RX prgm chng/ Bank messages to be controlled externally.

I have no use for MIDI songs since I play my parts, so is there anyone who uses recieve for an external MIDI prgm change device.

Thanks

I believe the solution is to turn LOCAL OFF on the Casio, and run a cable from the Casio's MIDI OUT to the Behringer's MIDI IN. (If it doesn't work, check the Behringer settings and make sure it is set to Merge its In with its Out.)

Maybe this is the best place for a shameless plug! Our now not-so-new new video at https://youtu.be/3ZRC3b4p4EI is a 40 minute adaptation of T. S. Eliot's "Prufrock" - check it out! And hopefully I'll have something new here this year. ;-)

Thanks Brotha' Man,

But I have been doing that and it works great, but I want to do the opposite. I wish to send Bank/Prgm changes to the Privia from the BCF2000.

I bought it B Stock so the manual is rather brief, and I am assuming it actually has a better manual, I shall check their site and see if there's a MIDI Implementation pdf.

The buttons have been tagged with Yellow tape and black lettering for easier viewing on stage but are just too hard to see still and too small.

I understood that, and the method I described should work fine. Just assign the Casio Program Change and MSB values for the sounds you want into the Berhringer. These values can be found in a chart in the PX3 manual, which you can download from the Casio web site.

Thanks again for responding but that method does not work, I found the MIDI implementation chart, and use the Casio's Bank LSB, and MSB to control my rackmounted SE-1Xs, so for external use it's great.

But due to the internal sound engine it seems there is no proper recieve ( RX Channel ) for recalling Banks 1-8 in Master Controller mode.

The Registration Banks as they are referred to do not repsond unless there is a dedicated Recieve Channel.

Iam waiting to hear back from Casio about this, as IMHO due to the rather smart way of layering and splitting sounds internally and externally, interferes with external Bank and Prgm Chng.

In other words it was designed to control, not be controlled.

I will post back the solution if there is one.

Oh, I see now. I thought you wanted the Behringer to call up the Casio's sounds, but instead you want the Behringer to call up its Registrations... and yes, that's a whole different problem. If it can be done, I think it would have to be a sysex thing.

I am praying, as I will have a custom MIDI Keypad from Germany made for this specific use. It will look like the Keypad on the right side of the QWERTY and the star and pound signs will represent the Bank LSB/MSB( Hexidecimally). It will then store this information so I can actually press the Bank Number then preset number so that 2 key presses, will call up any of the 64 registrations.

I am not knocking the Privia but those buttons and contacts will get worn out by me very quickly unless I come up with a way to change the registrations from an external device.

The Behringer can also do this but I prefer the custom device.

For example, 00 will recall Bank 1 Preset 1. And as you know you can recall these memories without the split activated, and then lets say you want to bring in a different set of Kontakt articulations, or the Tom Saywer low Drone on the lower section of the keybed, you simply hit split, But I would never store with the Split button on unless I needed it recalled with it activated for a real conventional split.

THis really is an excellent controller though, even if it won't recall Registrations on a global RX channel.

I can always cut up little white spunges, oval shaped, and glue them onto the contact, and this will extend the life of the rather D50-ish buttons..

Cheers.
