Any Ross Valory fans?

I got to play with him last Friday night at Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant, Mi.

Journey and Loverboy were playing Saturday night so we were hoping someone would come into the lounge and stir up some excitement.

I have to say that Ross did just that! What a great guy. He came up and we played Separate Ways, Anyway You Want It, Open Arms, Don't Stop Believing and a blues jam! The place was packed and everyone surrounded the stage (kind of an "in the round" except for the DJ area). All you could see were cell phones and smiling, happy faces including Ross. He definitely has some facial expressions that keep you guessing.

He also had an interesting technique on the bass. It seemed he was gliding all over and improvising but it sounded really cool and fit nicely.

After we played 'Anyway' he came up to me and said "Do you know Open Arms?" I said "Yes, sir!" and he said "Let's go!" so we played the opening together (I'm the keyboardist) - super cool!

I just thought I'd share in this forum where it may be appreciated! That was a cool thing he did and I wanted to let people know.

I'll post some pics in a minute.

Enough of a fan that he influenced the purchase of my primary bass (the Dingwall Afterburner -- though he has the active Zebra model). I told the story a while back.

Nice story! He does seem to be a really nice guy. I think he's a much better player than people give him credit for. I too remember him playing a t-40. If I remember correctly he also spent some time with Steve Miller.

Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it.

Huge Journey fan back in the day - still love the "classics" now. You can definitely hear some Ross influence in my playing - especially at church. Lots of the CCM stuff lends itself to "Journey" type fills/licks.

Great player. Under rated for sure.

Very cool. I was listening to "Captured" earlier this week, and Valory's bass lines are just right for the song every time, but he could break out for a few bars when the time was right, as he does in "La Do Da".

IMO, Journey turned into an embarassingly bland, formulaic pop act after Gregg Rolie (sp?) left, but the early albums showed them to be a real band of talented musicians who could rock out.

Guitar solos last 30 seconds, the bass line lasts for the whole song.

I've aways admired his playing and the way it so perfectly fit and complemented Journey's songs. My favorites are the first three albums but I loved the pop stuff up through Escape.

They tried to convince me to buy a T-40 when I bought my Jazz Bass back in '78, but I wasn't having it. In retrospect, I probably made the right choice.

A friend and mentor of mine bought one though, and used it for quite awhile.

Peavey basses are greatly underrated. I see them pop up at my local GC a lot of late, so have had an opportunity to try many models. All of them impress as being playable, well-constructed, with versatile sound. If I hadn't already ramped up my bass collection this past year with the "standards" (usual suspects such as P-bass/J-Bass etc.), I'd probably be interested in a T-40.
