Best way to find a Bass Player w/vocals?

Our bass player has decided to move on and the band would like to replace him and continue.

I thought I would see if anyone had any unique ideas in finding the right person. While I am not originally from Grand Rapids, the other guys are and know a lot of the local obvious choices but not really one they are excited about.

It would be nice to find that "retired" diamond hiding in the rough who may be considering jumping back into the scene to re-live some glory days.

We're the typical weekend warrior classic rock band with a faithful following and solid bookings. We play local (< 1 hour) at casino's, private party's, outdoor gigs up and down the Lake Michigan coast during the summer - along with the typical bar gigs. We like to dive a little deeper into the genre (yes, elp, kansas, rush, argent, journey, boston) so we need someone who can hang and even kick in some lead vocals.

This is starting to sound like an ad, which leads me to my next question: Is there a place here to formally post this where Bass players may see it?

Since you weren't around Grand Rapids when these types of bands were active, the only advice I can give you is to pick the brains of everyone who was - not just the musicians in your band, but everyone. That will widen the field of search.

It's a lot easier to find "lost' musicians these days. Pretty much all you need is a name. And given the description of your band, you should be able to find your guy. A lot of us older dudes won't come out of retirement just to jam around for the hell of it, and maybe play an occasional gig in a dinky bar. We want to once again play in front of a real audience.

And get paid

Thanks, Redkey. I wasn't sure if making an ad-type post was okay in a forum or if it should go in maybe the classifieds.

I think the other guys are hesitant to announce the opening publicly for fear of having to turn down people they know and are friends with but are not right for the position. That is making it difficult to network and search while trying to not offend a fairly tight group of local musician friends...

On the other hand, since I'm not local, maybe I should do the interviewing ;)

ummm...not quite unique and may have worked perfectly for your band, but we're not putting together a Holiday Inn tribute act.
