Sam Mullins
Yeah, I was saddened to hear the obit on NPR today. I used to work at The Labs and cut my teeth on the "K and R" C manual. I didn't know Mr. Ritchie personally, but one of the original UNIX/C crowd was a manager in my dept (Robert Morris Sr.) and I don't think those guys get enough credit from the non-tech world for the contribution they made. The whole philosophy of an open/modular/portable OS environment (and associated programming language) was pretty foreign before they came along. We see echoes of that even in something like the iPad (small apps that do one thing well.) Right up there with the invention of the transistor and the web in terms of impact.
