Chest Rockwell
What can I get away with as far as performance is concerned? What kind of money Am I looking at? I've got a real screamer of a DAW for home use but I need something more mobile for performance. What all would I need?
Ethan Winer
Chest, I just bought a Dell Inspiron 8500 [2.4 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, 60 GB hard drive] for $1600, and it's fast enough to play more tracks and soft-synths than I could possibly throw at it. It's very quiet too. It's not an ultralight that goes for 10 hours on one battery charge, but it does run for three hours. --Ethan The acoustic treatment experts Ethan's Audio Expert Book
Chest Rockwell
Wow. That's kind of like a small workstation that you have there. I'm sure I can get by with less than that for performance don't you think? And, less $$?
Ethan Winer
Chest, > I'm sure I can get by with less than that for performance don't you think? And, less $$? < Laptops come in two basic classes: desktop replacements and light weight. The first can have very high performance, but they're larger and the batteries don't run for as long. The second has poorer performance but in a smaller package and with longer battery life. I just wanted a small and very quiet computer to connect to my home theater. So for me the speed matters, and case size and battery life don't. I'd love to tell you what to buy, but there are far too many brands and models for me to know which will allow how many plug-ins and soft-synths at a given price. --Ethan The acoustic treatment experts Ethan's Audio Expert Book
