EddiePlaysBass
Yeah this is one of many suggestions blissfully ignored by my band mates. Ironically, we are called The Dapper Dans but we look like a bunch of slackers(look up the term "dapper dan" if you don't know what I mean). For my sub gig next Friday I asked about the dress code. They said a lumberjack shirt and a baseball cap. I don't have a shirt that fits the description so this weekend I am going to look for one. The gig does not pay (they are friends and they play for free too) and I am not in that band, but for that particular gig it will be the three of us, so no sense in me looking out of place. And if I ever sub for a grunge band (or get mine together), at least I will have an appropriate shirt for that gig, too "I'm a work in progress." Ross Brown
I am still getting some resistance from two of the guys in the band... I don't get it. The one guy in the band that has the most experience (ie toured with a Beatles tribute band and is the musical director for two other bands of younger kids)is on board and is speaking up. Tenstrum
and the Brick wall I actually really like the setting we took that pic in. We all thought the colors contrasted and mixed nicely. I have more pics taken in that alley and they all looked great. But sadly, the entire alley was painted over in a drab gray color several months back. Professionally done pics and promo pack will work wonders as well. Tenstrum "Paranoid? Probably. But just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there isn't an invisible demon about to eat your face." Ross Brown
Last night the guitarist and drummer dressed it up. Guitar ist had cool blue with black pin stripe dress shirt and black pants. Drummer went shopping and came up with a cool, all white shirt and pants. Shirt had some other stuff on it that was cool. Very nice. Singer wore blue jeans and ugly tee shirt. The peer pressure started and his girlfriend also started in on him... He said it is too hard with his fat belly to find nice clothes. I rejected that and offered to take him shopping. He doesn't own any thing but blues jeans.... Again I offered to go shopping with him... Maybe I imagined it but I swear the crowd took us more seriously... b5pilot
Oh man, get that singer hooked up! Being the front man he should be the biggest peacock in the flock. Ross Brown
Our front man has a lot of people that come to see him/us. He engages them during breaks but not during shows. He did better last Friday because we were being video taped... He is not Barry White.... nor Steven Tyler... just looking for some life from him... and style.... jeremy c
He doesn't have to be Barry White, but a long coat and dark colors will do wonders to minimizing a roly-poly appearance. He should talk to his fans from the stage and sing songs directly to them, maybe even change a lyric here and there and get their names in the songs. Free download of my cd!. EddiePlaysBass
Just got back from my sub gig - it was short but I had fun. At first our guitarist did not get the whole "dress like we belong together" look: http://users.telenet.be/thedapperdans/rlr2.JPG But about 4 songs in, he got the idea: http://users.telenet.be/thedapperdans/rlr1.JPG Simple idea as far as a band uniform goes, but it goes some way towards making us look like a band, I think. I had my mom buy me that shirt especially for the gig, as mentioned earlier  "I'm a work in progress." Juancarlin
Oh well, the dressing thing! As someone who has played in a lot of dressing situations (Once I was part of a house band for a local music awards broadcasted event, played with 5 different artists, and each artist's manager asked for some specific dressing, which we should change in each commercial break during the broadcast. THAT was hell), I have learned certain things: - Dressing differently (at least slightly) than the people attending the event always helps. After all, you're "The Artist", and people expect you to "be" somewhat different than them, unless you're playing a very small gig (cafe, winery...), where you can get out with looking like just another patron. - Elegant always works out good. Elegant also means lean, clean, sober. But... - You should always have the chance to check the public's look beforehand, or know what is the expected "fashion status" at the venue beforehands. Often I go to gigs with a suit bag with at least 2 dressing alternatives, just in case. For bigger shows, 3 alternatives, with switching possibilities between the three (hats, caps, ties, pull-overs, jackets, vests, different shirts and/or pants, all of those can be switched if colors are not too different, to give it a mid-show twist) - Turtlenecks ALWAYS do work well, unless you're playing Metal or heavy rock. - Black always dresses good, and helps to hide "dressing malfunctions" - last and maybe in controversy with the aforementioned, sometimes a nice bright colored detail can do a nice trick. I go sometimes to a secondhand clothing store, and find really weird, old, curious stuff for next to nothing. So, for the Disco show, I've eventually played in bright, stamped polyester shirts, or with some quite scandalous ties. For a more dramatic effect (ALL depends on the venue), I can use a black, long leather coat a-la-Neo-meets-Vampire , or a blue, 60's retro long coat I got for cheap, almost a-la Austin Powers. People likes to have something to smile at, and if you're making them dance, is even better. Oh, and +1 on keeping "show clothes" organized and separated from the "daily use" clothes. Specially after some days on the road. I wanted to share some videos with you, just to make my point that I have dressed to play in the most diverse (and sometimes funny) situations. Here, kinda "Cheap-Tricky" look, playing guitar in a corporate event: The turtleneck theory proven here, bass solo on a theater concert. Hippie-arabic look (Old shirt!!!) for a live tv show. And, if you think you have seen ugly, weird or funny band uniforms, you should have seen me back in 1994, playing in the orchestra of the famous local Merengue and tropical music singer, (I'm playing keyboards, right side of the stage from the public, also HERE, keyboards, same stage side). Ross Brown
I love it... would be brown with smoke when we were done with it, but I love it. PLayed another gig last night with everyone looking good except singer. Old crappy black tee shirt with faded decals and ugly blue jeans. We have our battle of bands on Wed. I will remind him once more. We have a band photo shoot on Thursday. I will not pay to be photographed unless he is looking good. I'll let him know that. The guitarist and I work his girlfriend last night. Told her to take him shopping and get him a haircut. She is trying to get through to him too... You are peer-pressuring him which can (and seems to) have an averse effect. Try the ego-routine. Tell him he is being upstaged by the good looks of the rest of the band, and therefore attention is drawn away from him as a front man. My sense is, he is setting himself apart from the band IN ORDER to get said attention. He stands out now, even if not in a good way. "I'm a work in progress."
