What do I do now...

SteveC

Recommended Posts

I have decided that I will play my Yamaha BB605 forever. Scoff if you must, but as some of you know, I have tried many other basses and always come back to it so why fight it.

Same with my amp - or slight variations. I like combos. They are easy to move, I just velcro my tune to the top and leave it it plugged in. I toss the power cord and my cable in my gig bag and I'm gone. The DI sounds great, too. Simple.

So now what do I do - online I mean? I usually spend my time looking for my next bass or trying to find the next amp. I know I could get off my computer and practice, which I do at home, but I still have time to kill off and on at work, so any suggestions?

First of all, I don't think there's anyone on this forum that has scoffed at your BB605. I daresay many of us are relieved that you've come to the conclusion that was nearly self-evident: that its the right bass for you! Congratulations!

On the other hand, there's no reason to make such final decisions about everything, my friend. How about just occasionally seeing what;s out there in bass land? You said it yourself - you're just killing some time. Not every moment spent on bass-oriented websites has to be task-oriented.

But there's a lot more stuff to get lost in on the Internet. Even if porn, games and needless, uninformed arguing are not your bag, there's STILL a ton of stuff to veg out on.

Try spending a few hours at ted.com. I am completely addicted to the site. I feel absolutely useless and selfish after watching some of those lectures.

Wikipedia, for all its faults, is still a great place to hit the "random" button.

Snopes.com is also a great place to surf so you can give coworkers the smackdown when they send you chain letters.

And those are just the ones that are general interest. You can delve into any narrow vertical you like, and there will be a site dedicated to it. It's like Rule 34, but for everything.

So I congratulate you on this plateau (I call it a plateau, because there's no way this feeling of serenity on gear choices is going to last). I hope you've enjoyed the ride.

Oh, and one thing I would personally like to see you do, Steven, is post some of your playing! I know you have some chops, so let's hear it!

"For instance" is not proof.

Try StumbleUpon.

I'll try to find some links if nothing else. We record our jazz gigs but it sometimes takes a while for them to get edited down and posted on Facebook. One of these days I'll get set up so I can at least Garage Band some stuff.

Start your own startup band in a genre you're not currently playing. Use your online time to generate a set list, find charts and lyrics, etc. If done properly this can eat up a considerable amount of time.

It's not what'cha got, it's how ya use it.

I'll bet if you look around you might find some pictures of naked ladies on the internet.

I knew that suggestion would end up in this thread sooner or later, but I wasn't gonna be the one to post it.

I've heard talk of that, too...even moving pictures.

Steve, are you serious?

Enjoy life. Unplug. Play music. You've got gear that works for you. That's great. You can always check in on new gear from time to time. But you should know better than to be consumed by some never-ending quest for gear.

Let's at least try to stay serious, here ... As if anyone ever checks those 5 remaining internet pages ;)

Actually a good suggestion, even if you don't actually start that band in the end ...

Steve C, I heard a story once about a guy who came across another guy playing his bass. You would think that wouldn't be very remarkable, but this guy was playing the same note over and over again, just going boom boom boom boom boom, etc.

The first guy listened for a while and said "Hey, don't you know any tunes to play?", and the player looked up annoyed, and told him "I AM playing a song, schmuck, you're just too uncool to hear it!", and went back to going boom boom boom boom, etc.

Not wanting to seem uncool, the first guy said, "I'm sorry man, I just hadn't heard enough of it I guess, keep playing, maybe I'll pick it up," and listened for a while longer .'After a few minutes of nothing but boom boom boom boom on the same note, the guy spoke up and said, "Hey, I don't mean to be uncool or anything, but I've listened to a lot of music in my life, and I know a little about it. The famous guys, like Marcus and Victor and Jeremy C, they all play more than one note in their tunes. How is it that you only play that one note?"

The player looked up, shook his head in disgust and said, "Those dudes are all still looking for it, I FOUND IT!"

If you've found it, enjoy it, you're way ahead of the rest of us who haven't...

Always remember that you are unique. Just like everyone else.

You can always look for another Yamaha BB605 as a backup, no an army of them I say and legions of combos to appease the masses.

I'm happy you found the gear that fills the hole in your soul and wish that others will too. Now all there is to do is play music and enjoy yourself.

If you think my playing is bad, you should hear me sing!

Nice going Steve, I bet it feels good. On the other hand, I just bought bass #24

Totally none of my business, but I'm starting to wonder how many girlfriends you've had in that time, Rizzo. I sense commitment issues. :/

You could spend your time on the internets by going on youtube and listening to every song ever recorded. (and learning them).

I'm always looking at gear on the web but I keep saying that I'm not going to buy any more. No one in the band notices any difference anyway.

I certainly didn't need the Jaguar bass I bought last year, but it was fun to bring it last week to a gig where the guitarist had a Jaguar guitar.

Indeed. This is clearly the fishing that you'll need. Put flats on one, rounds on another, nylon tapes on another. Then hunt for that limited edition special paint job one. And you'll need a fretless one. Then another fretless one.

Better git to it, fella. Time's a'wasting.

Things are just the way they are, and they're only going to get worse.

I do look up/listen to a lot of tunes on You Tube actually.

No one in the band does notice really. If they didn't see a different bass, they wouldn't know.

It's actually the BEST way...except for, of course, 3 geese, some rubber bands, a bottle of Stoli, and a cat 'o nine tails made from the hair of a Pomeranian.

YMMV.
