Bass string colored silk wrapping

Rocky McDougall

Recommended Posts

Many times I have bought a used bass and was unsure what strings were on it. I would like to start a database on these colors and could use your help. If you could list some of the strings that you have and sure of the color of the silk or if they have no silk I will compile the data and make it known to our forum.

Thanks, Rocky

To start:

TI Jazz flats - bright red

D'Addario Chrome flats - silver blue

Here's what I had lying around:

Rotosound Swing Bass-red

Dean Markley Blue Steel-blue

La Bella Deep Talkin' Baaa (flatwounds)-baby blue

GHS Brite Flats-black

Pedulla-black

DR strings--all types-no silk

Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky-no silk

Elixir Nanowebs-no silk

I didn't realize that I had so many strings lying around. I guess it's time to start restringing again.

Fender 7150, yellow.

I still have the .pdf chart from BassPlayer's Wind Tasting article several years back, it has color pictures that are (mostly) clear enough to help.

Yes, please.

D'addario XL Chromes 5 string flats (regular light gage) = blue

Ernie Ball Slinkys 5 string = none (pretty much mentioned already)

DR Long necks 5 string Tapered = none

Martin Phosphor Bronze Acoustic bass = none

Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it.

PM an email address. Sorry I don't have a web site I can post it to right now, it seems Geocities left me without saying goodbye.

When I restring a bass I put the paper cover from the string bag/box into the little pocket in the little bag that has my little doo-dads that I keep in my gig suitcase. I should probably start marking on this paper which bass it belongs to, but that hasn't yet been an issue. If you have a separate case for each bass, that'd be a better place for it.

Things are just the way they are, and they're only going to get worse.
