Ross Brown
We played our wedding gig this past Friday night. It was outdoors but covered with a nice pavilion. Rained like crazy and was more humid that I ever remember. What I learned: 1. Extreme humidity makes the strings very sticky. 2. Dance floors are slippery when wet. 3. I should charge much, much more for weddings (too much down time) 4. If the ceremony is at the same place as the reception, you wont be doing a sound check unless you get there ridiculously early. 5. Guitarist wont get there ridiculously early. 6. Wont matter because drummer wont be ready anyway. 7. There is a lot of work in the days and weeks before the wedding (talking to the bride, over and overlearning dumb songs) 8. Guitarists that come straight from work and dont have time to grab a bite to eat will show up grouchy (we fed him, then he was better). 9. The fun begins when the old people leave 10. It is nice when they insist that the band eats and drinks and has fun too Overall it was fun but I would do it differently next time. TimR
... Overall it was fun but I would do it differently next time. Yep, and you'll do it differently the time after and the time after that.... Its called experience and that is indeed why and when you charge more. The more you listen and talk to the bride, the more she feels special and the more likely she is to recommend you. Learning special tunes is a really nice touch, we do it whenever possible. If not we get them on the iPod to play during our break. Well done! The biggest difficulty is trying to get band members (why is it the Guitarist and the Drummer?) to understand that you are there for the Bride (and the Bride's mother) and no one else. Its not so that the Guitarist can play loads of blisteringly loud solos or the drummer can play huge runs (and get off with a bridesmaid) Feel the groove internally within your own creativity. - fingertalkin

Cthulhu Fhtagn
I found that your #9 would have been in my top three. I've never had an eighty-something drunk off his but jump up on a table and yell "Freebird". jeremy c
...I've never had an eighty-something drunk off his butt jump up on a table and yell "Freebird". Give it 15-20 years and it will happen. Free download of my cd!.
Davo-London
I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd back in the 70's and I shouted "Freebird". Did I commit some horrendous faux pas? b5pilot
Congrats Ross. We've done a couple of wedding gigs which was kind of odd for us since we're a classic rock band, but they can be lots of fun. For us though, #11 would be making sure the drummer dresses appropriately for the gig. Lydian mode? The only mode I know has the words "pie ala" in front of it. http://www.myspace.com/theeldoradosband
